Borgo Santo Pietro
First Impressions
When you first catch sight of Borgo Santo Pietro emerging from the rolling Tuscan hills near Chiusdino, it honestly feels like stumbling upon a secret — one that’s been hiding in plain sight for centuries. This five-star estate sprawls across 300 acres of pristine countryside, and I mean, you can immediately tell this isn’t your typical luxury hotel. The 13th-century architecture has been restored with such care that walking through feels like stepping into a living piece of Italian history.
The Tuscan Setting
You know what really strikes me about this place? It’s maybe ten minutes from the ruins of San Galgano Abbey — that famous roofless gothic cathedral you’ve probably seen in photos. The location is genuinely remote (in the best possible way), tucked into Val di Merse where the silence is actually profound. I’d wake up to nothing but birdsong and the distant sound of horses in the pastures, which honestly became addictive after a few days.
Equestrian Excellence
The horseback riding here isn’t just an add-on activity — it’s clearly a passion project. They’ve got their own stables with beautiful horses, and the trails wind through vineyards, olive groves, and medieval villages that most tourists never see. What I loved is how they match you with horses based on your actual skill level, not just what you claim it is. The guides know every hidden path and will take you to viewpoints where you can see all the way to Monte Amiata on clear days.
Accommodations and Dining
Each room and suite feels like it was designed individually — no cookie-cutter luxury here. Mine had original frescoed ceilings and windows that opened onto gardens where they actually grow ingredients for the restaurant. Speaking of which, the food is extraordinary in that farm-to-table way that actually means something here. They’ve got their own organic gardens, and I watched the chef picking herbs while I had my morning espresso. The wine comes from their own vineyards, naturally, and it’s genuinely excellent.
Why Guests Love It
What makes this place special for horse enthusiasts isn’t just the riding — it’s how seamlessly everything connects. You can spend the morning exploring ancient Etruscan paths on horseback, then return for treatments at their spa (which uses products made from their own botanicals), followed by dinner featuring vegetables harvested that same day. There’s parking for those driving from Florence or Siena, but honestly, once you’re here, you won’t want to leave the property. It’s expensive, sure, but for the level of luxury and the authentic Tuscan experience — especially for serious riders — it’s actually worth every euro.

Simply the best hotel I’ve been to in my life, The farm to table food is excellent. The staff is the most welcoming I’ve seen before and the gardens are something from a movie. The bikes give you the chance to visit the farm and the animals which are very well treated. The breakfast as well, simply lovely. What could be improved: I enjoyed...
