Le Cameleon Hotel Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Le Cameleon Hotel feels like stumbling upon a well-kept secret in Puerto Viejo. The property sits about ten minutes from the main beach strip, which honestly works in its favor — you get that jungle luxury vibe without the constant parade of surfers and backpackers. The architecture immediately catches your eye with its bold, contemporary lines that somehow don’t clash with the surrounding rainforest. It’s definitely a five-star property, but it doesn’t hit you over the head with pretentious luxury.

The Setting

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to carve out sophistication in what’s essentially Costa Rica’s most laid-back Caribbean town. You’re still close enough to walk to the black sand beaches and that amazing bread shop on the main road (trust me, you’ll find it), but far enough away that howler monkeys are your main wake-up call instead of reggaeton. The pool area becomes the heart of the property — it’s where you’ll probably spend your afternoons with a guaro sour, watching iguanas sunbathe on the deck chairs.

Rooms Worth Talking About

Each room feels like its own little sanctuary, with floor-to-ceiling windows that blur the line between inside and jungle. The air conditioning actually works well here — something you can’t take for granted in this humid corner of Costa Rica. I particularly love how they’ve incorporated local artwork without going overboard on the tropical theme. The bathrooms are spacious with rainfall showers, though you might find a tiny gecko keeping you company (they’re harmless and actually kind of endearing).

Food and Atmosphere

The on-site restaurant surprised me with its quality — you’re getting creative takes on Caribbean-Costa Rican fusion that go way beyond rice and beans. Their breakfast game is strong too, with fresh tropical fruits that taste like they were picked minutes ago. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working here, which makes a huge difference in how your stay feels. You know what I mean — there’s nothing worse than forced hospitality, and that’s not an issue at Le Cameleon.

Why Guests Love It

This hotel works because it gets the balance right between luxury and authenticity. You’re not staying in some sterile resort bubble — you can still hear the sounds of the jungle at night and feel connected to Puerto Viejo’s unique Caribbean-Costa Rican culture. The property attracts travelers who want comfort and style but don’t need everything spelled out for them. It’s perfect for couples looking for something special, or honestly, solo travelers who appreciate good design and don’t mind paying a bit more for quality in a region where accommodation standards can be pretty hit-or-miss.

Good proximity to private beach and pools. Spacious room and veranda.
Nice evening entertainment on the Friday and Saturday but not Sunday

What could be improved: Air conditioning could either be full on or off with no facility to adjust fan speed. Very noisy when on.
Bedroom lights lacked any bedside lamps and required getting out of bed to turn on/off main lights.
Breakfast menu mediocre with very little variety.

Overall, great service. Very friendly staff and clean and nice facilities. Breakfast was excellent and varied. The access to the beach was great.

What could be improved: The parking spaces are limited and they are on the street so we decided to not use our car so we wouldn't lose our spot.

The hotel is stunning, nestled in lush greenery that gives you the feeling of being deep in the jungle. The rooms are bright, clean, and well-maintained. The pools and hot tub are beautiful, and the front desk and hotel staff are genuinely warm and welcoming. The location is exceptional—close to everything, yet serene.

Room service and dinner quality were both quite good.

What could be improved: The breakfast was underwhelming, more in line with a 3-star experience. Service during breakfast felt slow and disorganized. The massage we received was excellent, though slightly overpriced and outsourced.

We’ve stayed at over 20 hotels across Costa Rica, and this was the first that didn’t offer a coffee machine in the room, which was a surprise. There’s also a noticeable tendency to upsell on everything, which somewhat detracts from the relaxed luxury the hotel aims to offer.

This was a great place to stay with the kids. I love how they offer a pack and play free of charge. The beach across the street is pretty rough so I’d recommend going to a calmer beach h especially with little kids
