El Silencio Lodge & Spa Costa Rica
First Impressions
When I first arrived at El Silencio Lodge & Spa Costa Rica, honestly, I wasn’t prepared for just how remote this place actually is. You’re driving through cloud forest on winding mountain roads, and suddenly there’s this luxury eco-lodge tucked into the hillside like it grew there naturally. The whole property feels like someone took the concept of “getting away from it all” and actually meant it — I mean, the name literally means “The Silence,” and they weren’t kidding around.
The Cloud Forest Setting
This five-star lodge sits in one of Costa Rica’s most pristine cloud forests, about two hours from San José, and the location is everything. You wake up to howler monkeys calling across the valley, and there’s this constant mist rolling through the trees that makes everything feel sort of mystical. The horseback riding here isn’t your typical trail ride either — you’re actually exploring primary forest paths where quetzals nest, and the guides know exactly where to spot wildlife without disturbing the ecosystem.
Accommodations and Amenities
Each room is actually more like a private villa with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the forest canopy, and honestly, you’ll spend way too much time just watching the mist move through the trees. The suites have these deep soaking tubs where you can hear the river rushing below, and the beds — well, let’s just say the organic cotton linens and those views make it really hard to get up for morning rides. The spa treatments use local volcanic clay and indigenous plants, which sounds gimmicky but actually works amazingly well after a day in the saddle.
Dining and Sustainability
The restaurant sources everything from local farms and their own organic gardens, and you can actually taste the difference — I’m talking about vegetables that were probably picked that morning. They do this thing where they pair each meal with stories about the local farmers, which could be cheesy but somehow works perfectly here. The wine selection focuses on organic and biodynamic bottles, and there’s something really satisfying about sipping a natural wine while watching toucans in the trees outside.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a place where you’ll find tons of activities or nightlife — the whole point is digital detox and connecting with nature on horseback. The riding program takes you through private trails that most tourists never see, past waterfalls and through ancient tree groves where your horse’s hoofbeats are the only sound for miles. What really gets people is how the staff manages to provide genuine luxury service while maintaining this deep respect for the environment — there’s parking for maybe twenty cars max, and they keep guest numbers deliberately low. You know what? Sometimes the best luxury is knowing you’re in a place that prioritizes the forest over profit margins.

Truly excellent. We stayed in the 2 bedroom villa and it was perfect. The hikes were beautiful, as was the lodge. Food was great too. It was an incredible stay!

Great Location and very friendly staff!

Just be aware that the road to the location is very steep and the location is remote. You will need a 4x4 to get there.

Loved how tucked away in nature this resort is. The staff was excellent and attentive to every need and request. It was a very relaxing spot with as much or as little to do as you want.

The villa, facilities, staff and activities were excellent. We loved yoga every morning. There’s a wonderful spa. We rode horses, went zip-lining and visited the waterfalls. The food was very fresh and, for the most part, delicious. If you wanted something else, they’d make it - my son and husband got made to order omelettes and I got a Vegan...

Fantastic location and accommodation in 2 bed villa. Staff were available and attentive. Loved the guided mystical tour and the impromptu guided bird watching walk.
