Gilpin Hotel & Lake House
First Impressions
You know that feeling when you pull up to a place and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first arrived at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House. Tucked away on Crook Road in Bowness-on-Windermere, this five-star property has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream luxury — it whispers it. The building itself feels more like an upscale country home than a traditional hotel, which honestly makes the whole experience feel more intimate and special.
Location & Setting
The location is absolutely spot-on, especially if you’re here with someone special — couples consistently rave about it, and I can see why. You’re close enough to Bowness-on-Windermere to easily walk into town for dinner or a lake cruise, but far enough removed to feel like you’ve escaped the tourist crowds. The Lake District surrounds you here, and I mean that in the best possible way. Free parking is included too, which might sound minor but trust me, it’s a relief when you’re navigating these winding Cumbrian roads with luggage.
The Rooms
I’ve stayed in plenty of places that promise comfort, but the beds at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House actually deliver on that promise. There’s something about sinking into those sheets after a day of hiking around the fells that just works perfectly. The rooms themselves strike this nice balance between luxury and livability — they’re beautifully appointed without feeling too precious to actually relax in. Each room has its own character, and the attention to detail is the kind you notice without it being showy about it.
Breakfast Experience
Breakfast here is one of those experiences that sets the tone for your entire day. They offer everything from a proper full English to continental options and vegetarian choices, so there’s something for everyone. What I particularly appreciated was the quality — this isn’t your standard hotel breakfast buffet situation. The ingredients feel local and fresh, which makes sense given where you are in the Lake District. It’s the kind of meal that actually fuels you for a day of exploring rather than just filling you up.
Why Guests Love It
What really makes Gilpin Hotel & Lake House work is how it manages to feel both luxurious and genuinely welcoming. The staff seem to understand that you’re here to experience the Lake District, not just pass through it, and they’re genuinely helpful with recommendations and local insights. The combination of that prime location, those incredibly comfortable accommodations, and the overall attention to creating a real experience rather than just a place to sleep — that’s what keeps people coming back. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself already planning your return visit before you’ve even checked out.

Garden suite was superb plenty of room and quality furnishings plus bonus of use of a sauna, reception staff to waiting and ground staff were fantastic and helpful

You need to book reservations in the two restaurants well in advance of arriving but my fault really for that.

The staff were excellent m: polite, professional and friendly. The room was clean, large and comfortable. The dining rooms were clean and inviting. The breakfasts were excellent. What could be improved: The eventmeals in both restaurants were not to my taste. The choice of meals on the menu was unappealing. I did not mind the small portions but...

Beautiful location. Superb staff. Felt at home.

Fabulous location, over looking a private lake with hot tubs in the grounds & a pool. Room was very well appointed as expected for 5* accommodation. Stayed specifically as we wanted to dine at the Gilpin Lodge. What could be improved: Check in not that great. No introduction to the facilities and how to use them (hot tubs or rowing boats)...
