Villa Marbella
First Impressions
Honestly, Villa Marbella caught me completely off guard. When you’re driving through the rural roads of Guanacaste Province toward Islita, you don’t expect to stumble upon something this thoughtfully designed. It’s part of the larger Hotel Punta Islita property, but Villa Marbella feels like its own little world — perched on the hillside with these sweeping views of the Pacific that’ll make you forget to check your phone for hours.
The Setting
What struck me most about this unique boutique hotel is how it manages to feel both secluded and accessible. You’re technically in the middle of nowhere (the nearest real town is about 45 minutes away), but there’s something liberating about that. The property sits above one of Costa Rica’s most pristine beaches, and I mean pristine — we’re talking about a stretch of sand where you might see more scarlet macaws than people on any given day.
The Villa Experience
My room was actually more like a private retreat than typical hotel accommodation. The architecture here draws from traditional Costa Rican design but with modern touches that actually work — not the forced fusion you sometimes get at resort properties. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame those ocean views I mentioned, and there’s this lovely terrace where I found myself having coffee every morning, watching the sunrise paint the water different shades of gold.
Local Flavor
Here’s what you need to know about the dining situation — the on-site restaurant focuses heavily on local ingredients, which means the menu changes based on what’s available from nearby farms and fishing boats. I had some of the best ceviche of my trip here, and the staff seemed genuinely excited to explain where everything came from. The wine list isn’t extensive, but they’ve clearly put thought into pairing options that complement the coastal setting.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Villa Marbella isn’t for everyone — if you need constant entertainment or easy access to shopping, you’ll probably feel restless. But if you’re looking for a place where you can actually disconnect (the WiFi works fine, but you won’t want to use it much), this hits differently than your typical beach resort. The combination of thoughtful service, stunning natural surroundings, and that sense of discovery you get from being somewhere genuinely special — that’s what keeps people coming back. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying at a place where the staff remembers your name and your coffee preferences by day two.
