When I first pulled up to Top Mountain Resort, I’ll be honest — the name had me expecting something completely different. This unique boutique hotel sits tucked away in Pahala Kadurugamuwa, about twenty minutes from Diyatalawa town center, and it’s more like discovering a hidden gem than arriving at your typical resort. The mountain air hits you immediately when you step out of the car, and you realize you’re actually at a pretty decent elevation here in Sri Lanka’s hill country.
The Setting
What struck me most was how this place manages to feel remote without being inconvenient. You’re surrounded by tea plantations and rolling hills, but it’s not like you’re completely cut off from civilization. The views from the property stretch for miles — on a clear morning, you can see layers of mountains disappearing into the distance. I mean, the sunrises here are something else, and I’m not usually the type to wake up early for scenery.
The Room Experience
My room was honestly bigger than I expected from the photos online. The decor walks this interesting line between modern comfort and local touches — nothing too fancy, but thoughtfully done. The beds are comfortable, and here’s something practical: the hot water actually works reliably, which isn’t always a given in Sri Lankan hill country properties. You’ll want to pack a light jacket though, because evenings can get surprisingly cool up here.
Food and Hospitality
The restaurant serves a mix of Sri Lankan and international dishes, and honestly, their Sri Lankan breakfast is worth trying even if you’re not usually adventurous with food. The staff here genuinely seem to care about making your stay work — they’re not just going through the motions. When I needed directions to a nearby waterfall, one of the guys actually drew me a little map and marked where the tricky turn was.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a five-star place with endless amenities, but that’s kind of the point. People come here to disconnect a bit and experience Sri Lanka’s hill country without roughing it completely. The parking is right there when you need it, the Wi-Fi works when you absolutely have to check emails, and you’re close enough to explore places like Ella or Bandarawela as day trips. It’s that sweet spot between authentic local experience and having the basics covered properly.
