First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Secret Bay, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name — but wow, this place really lives up to it. Tucked away on Dominica’s northwest coast near Portsmouth, this five-star resort feels like stumbling upon someone’s incredibly well-kept secret. The property sits on these dramatic clifftops overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and I mean, the views alone are worth the trip. You know what struck me most? How they’ve managed to create this sense of complete privacy while still feeling warm and welcoming.

The Villas

Each villa here is basically its own private sanctuary — I stayed in one of their clifftop units and felt like I had my own slice of paradise. The design is this perfect blend of contemporary luxury and Caribbean soul, with these gorgeous hardwood finishes and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the ocean views. My room had this incredible outdoor shower situation that made me feel like I was bathing in a tropical garden, which sounds cheesy but actually felt magical. The kitchen was fully equipped too, though honestly, with their culinary program, I barely used it except for morning coffee on the terrace.

Location & Setting

What makes this spot so special is how it sits right between the rainforest and the sea — you’re literally surrounded by nature on all sides. Portsmouth is just a short drive away if you want to explore, but the resort itself feels completely removed from everything. I spent hours just watching the sunset from my villa’s deck, and the staff mentioned that humpback whales pass by during certain seasons. The beach access is via this winding path down the cliff, and while it’s a bit of a trek, having that secluded stretch of sand mostly to yourself is pretty incredible.

Dining & Amenities

The restaurant here focuses on this farm-to-table approach using ingredients from their own gardens and local suppliers — I had some of the best seafood of my life during my stay. They’ve got this spa that offers treatments in these open-air pavilions where you can hear the waves crashing below, which was honestly one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve ever had. The infinity pool seems to blend right into the horizon, and there’s something almost meditative about swimming there at sunset. Parking isn’t really an issue since each villa has its own designated spot, though most guests seem to just walk everywhere once they arrive.

Why Guests Love It

I can see why couples rate this place so highly — it’s got that perfect balance of adventure and romance that’s hard to find. During the day, you can hike through the rainforest or snorkel in the bay, then spend your evenings in complete luxury watching the stars from your private deck. The staff somehow manages to be incredibly attentive without ever making you feel like your privacy is being invaded. It’s definitely a splurge, but for a special occasion or when you really want to disconnect from the world, Secret Bay delivers something pretty extraordinary.
