Gidleigh Park- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel
First Impressions
When you first glimpse Gidleigh Park- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel through the trees on that winding country lane, you honestly think you’ve stumbled onto a movie set. This five-star manor house sits in the heart of Dartmoor like it’s been waiting there forever — which, considering it dates back to the 1920s, it sort of has. The Tudor-style architecture feels properly grand without being intimidating, and you know what strikes you immediately? The silence. Just birdsong and maybe a distant horse whinnying from the stables.
The Dartmoor Setting
The location in Chagford is actually perfect for riders — you’re surrounded by some of Devon’s most spectacular moorland terrain. I mean, 107 acres of private grounds that roll right into Dartmoor National Park, where wild ponies still roam free. The hotel organizes rides across these ancient landscapes, and honestly, cantering across the moors at sunrise with mist rolling through the valleys is something that stays with you. The riding instructors here know every bridle path and hidden valley within miles.
Luxury Accommodations
Each room feels like a sophisticated country house bedroom rather than a hotel space. Mine had this gorgeous four-poster bed and windows overlooking the North Teign River — you can actually hear the water babbling away below. The furnishings blend antique charm with modern luxury seamlessly, though what impressed me most was the attention to detail. Fresh flowers from the garden, locally-made toiletries, and they’ll even arrange for your riding boots to be cleaned overnight.
Dining Excellence
The restaurant deserves its reputation — this is Michelin-starred dining that somehow doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious. Chef uses ingredients from the hotel’s own kitchen garden and local Dartmoor suppliers, which you can taste in every bite. After a long day in the saddle, settling into the oak-paneled dining room feels wonderfully civilizing. The wine list is exceptional too, and the sommelier actually remembers what you enjoyed from previous evenings.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart for equestrian travelers is how seamlessly they blend luxury hospitality with serious riding opportunities. The spa treatments are perfect for soothing post-ride muscles, and there’s secure parking right by the main entrance if you’re arriving with your own horse trailer. But honestly? It’s the staff that makes the difference — they genuinely care about creating memorable experiences, whether that’s arranging a private ride to Castle Drogo or simply ensuring your morning coffee is waiting when you return from dawn hacks across the moor.

Excellent breakfast choices, more than I could manage! Very helpful staff throughout the hotel, front of house, restaurant or wherever. Restaurant staff very well trained, and made our daughter's special day memorable. What could be improved: A pity there is not a lift but I don't know where you would accommodate one in such a building. A small...

This was a special occassion to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary, it was a very elegant Hotel in a beautiful location,
and the staff were very attentive to our requirements.
The evening meal was very special as this Haute cuisine food is not what we are used to, the breakfast in the morning was equally special too.

We love the location, very private. The food was excellent…extraordinary flavours! The staff were outstanding. We’ve stayed at the property before and especially like the fact that we see some of the same faces, which says a lot about the excellent management. We enjoyed our stay very much and plan to go back!
