Gidleigh Park- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel
First Impressions
Honestly, nothing quite prepares you for the approach to Gidleigh Park — A Relais & Chateaux Hotel. You wind through narrow Devon lanes, past stone walls and moorland, wondering if your GPS has lost its mind, and then suddenly there it’s — this Tudor-style manor house that looks like it’s been plucked from a fairy tale. The five-star property sits in 107 acres of gardens and woodland, and I mean, the setting is so dramatic it almost feels theatrical. Staff greet you at the entrance with that perfect balance of warmth and professionalism that luxury hotels strive for but rarely achieve this naturally.
Location and Surroundings
The location in Chagford puts you right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, which explains why couples rate it so highly — there’s something deeply romantic about being surrounded by this wild, ancient landscape. You’re actually quite isolated here, which is entirely the point. The nearest village is a pleasant walk through the grounds, but you’ll find yourself not wanting to leave the estate much. The private parking is a godsend because, well, you definitely need a car to get here, and the roads can be tricky if you’re not used to Devon’s winding lanes.
The Rooms
The rooms live up to the luxury billing without feeling stuffy or overdone. Mine had views across the North Teign River valley, and I spent way too much time just staring out the window. The beds are genuinely exceptional — I’m usually a light sleeper, but something about the combination of country air and those incredibly comfortable mattresses had me sleeping like I hadn’t in months. The bathrooms are spacious with proper bathtubs, and there’s this attention to detail in the furnishings that feels authentic rather than designed by committee.
Dining Experience
Breakfast deserves its own conversation because they’ve thought of absolutely everything. The full English is outstanding (obviously), but they also do continental, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options without making any of them feel like an afterthought. The buffet setup works well, though honestly, the cooked-to-order items are where they really shine. The restaurant itself has this lovely conservatory feel, and watching the gardens wake up while you’re having your morning coffee is sort of magical. You know what impressed me most? They remember your preferences after just one meal.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about Gidleigh Park that makes you understand why people return year after year. It’s not just the luxury — though that’s certainly there — it’s the way the place makes you feel genuinely disconnected from the outside world without feeling cut off. The staff seem to anticipate what you need before you realize you need it, and the setting provides this perfect backdrop for whatever you’re celebrating or escaping from. Couples particularly seem to fall under its spell, and I can see why — there’s an intimacy to the scale and surroundings that larger luxury hotels simply can’t replicate.

Everything was delightful: service, place, park, entire experience. The view from any window was breathtaking. Hotel is surrounded by fairytale forest. It's a perfect place for weekend. I dream to get back.

No tea or coffee making facilities in rooms. Difficult access road down very narrow winding lanes.

Excellent breakfast choices, more than I could manage! Very helpful staff throughout the hotel, front of house, restaurant or wherever. Restaurant staff very well trained, and made our daughter's special day memorable. What could be improved: A pity there is not a lift but I don't know where you would accommodate one in such a building. A small...

This was a special occassion to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary, it was a very elegant Hotel in a beautiful location,
and the staff were very attentive to our requirements.
The evening meal was very special as this Haute cuisine food is not what we are used to, the breakfast in the morning was equally special too.

We love the location, very private. The food was excellent…extraordinary flavours! The staff were outstanding. We’ve stayed at the property before and especially like the fact that we see some of the same faces, which says a lot about the excellent management. We enjoyed our stay very much and plan to go back!
