Relais & Châteaux IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau
First Impressions
When you pull up to Relais & Châteaux IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau in the tiny village of Brail, honestly, you might wonder if you’ve taken a wrong turn. This five-star luxury retreat sits so quietly in the Engadin valley that it feels almost secretive — which, after spending a few days here, I realized is exactly the point. The building itself blends beautifully with the Alpine surroundings, all local stone and warm wood that makes it feel like it’s always belonged here.
Location & Mountain Access
Brail isn’t exactly a household name, but that’s what makes this place special for equestrian enthusiasts. You’re positioned perfectly between the larger resort towns yet tucked away in authentic Swiss countryside where horses actually belong. The riding trails here connect directly to some of the most spectacular mountain paths in the Engadin — I mean, you can literally saddle up and disappear into Alpine meadows within minutes. The hotel maintains its own small stable, and they’ve got relationships with local outfitters who really know these mountains.
The Luxury Experience
Each room feels more like a sophisticated mountain retreat than a typical hotel space. Mine had this incredible view across the valley, with furnishings that managed to be both elegantly luxurious and genuinely cozy. The bathrooms are particularly impressive — after a long day in the saddle, that deep soaking tub becomes your best friend. What struck me most was how they’ve maintained that intimate Relais & Châteaux attention to detail while keeping everything feeling authentically Swiss rather than generically upscale.
Dining & Hospitality
The restaurant focuses on what they call “Alpine cuisine with a contemporary twist,” which sounds fancy but really just means they’re doing incredible things with local ingredients. The chef sources from farms right here in the valley, and you can taste that connection to the land. Breakfast is this wonderful spread of local cheeses, house-made breads, and honestly some of the best coffee I’ve had in Switzerland. The staff — well, they seem to genuinely care about making your stay memorable, not just checking boxes.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find crowded riding programs or touristy trail rides. Instead, you get access to some of Switzerland’s most pristine equestrian territory with the kind of personalized service that makes you feel like a welcomed guest rather than just another booking. The combination of that 9.6 rating with the Engadin’s incredible natural beauty creates something pretty special — especially if you’re looking for luxury that doesn’t feel disconnected from the landscape around it. After three days here, I understood why people return year after year.

The staff was really accommodating and friendly. As soon as you enter the room, there is a lot of wood which makes it very cosy. Also there is music in the room to set the vibes to chill and relax. Also there was a welcoming drink; champagne and in the room a bottle of water with mint which was sweet and delicious. The lunch and breakfast was...

We showed up to the property via organized car from the hotel and were extremely impressed immediately by the service. The hotel itself exudes luxury yet so cozy with fires going. We have two young kids that were so happy with the cozy nook they had in our room with their own beds. We were on a 3 week vacation in Italy and Switzerland and had the...

The food was great, the Service Team was very friendly and helpful and what was extraordinery the lovely attitude to dogs. Our Schnauzer got as good service as us. In the room there was everything ready - a bed, 2 bowls, treats, dog towels. At the restaurant the same. I never experienced such a nice dogfriendly aproach. Thank you so much! We will...
