Dragsholm Slot Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Dragsholm Slot honestly feels like stepping into a Danish fairytale — and I mean that in the best possible way. This 13th-century castle sits on the edge of Hørve surrounded by rolling countryside, and there’s something almost surreal about pulling up to what’s essentially a medieval fortress that happens to be your hotel for the night. The massive stone walls and towers make quite an impression, though the whole place has this welcoming warmth that keeps it from feeling intimidating.

The Riding Experience

What really drew me here was the equestrian program, and honestly, it exceeded expectations. The stables house beautiful horses that are well-trained for riders of different skill levels, and the trails wind through the castle grounds and into the surrounding Danish countryside. You know what’s special? Riding out from a medieval castle at sunrise — it’s something you don’t forget. The staff actually knows their horses individually and matches you thoughtfully, which makes all the difference when you’re exploring unfamiliar terrain.

The Room and Castle Life

My room was in one of the castle towers, with thick stone walls and windows that looked out over the gardens and countryside beyond. The accommodations blend historical character with modern comfort — you’ll find period furniture alongside updated bathrooms and heating that actually works well. Some rooms have four-poster beds, others feature original ceiling beams, and each feels genuinely unique rather than cookie-cutter.

Dining at the Castle

The restaurant here operates at a level that surprised me — they’ve got a Michelin star, which feels almost understated given the setting. Chef Claus Henriksen focuses on Nordic cuisine using ingredients from the castle’s own gardens and local suppliers. Dinner becomes this theatrical experience in the castle’s grand dining halls, with candlelight reflecting off stone walls. The wine cellar, carved into the castle’s foundations, houses an impressive collection that pairs beautifully with the seasonal menus.

Why Guests Love It

I think what makes this place work is how it balances the historical grandeur with genuine hospitality — it never feels like a museum you’re sleeping in. The location puts you within easy reach of Zealand’s attractions, but honestly, you might find yourself content to explore the castle grounds, ride the trails, and enjoy the peaceful countryside setting. There’s adequate parking on the grounds, which matters when you’re staying somewhere this remote. It’s the kind of place where you disconnect from the usual routine and remember why you started traveling in the first place.

It was interesting and I appreciated decaf coffee that us hard to find in Denmark
We enjoyed the breads.

What could be improved: On our last night there was so much noise we had to close the windows. We guessed it was the sound of yard work like trimming.

What a superb place! We arrived late after our car broke down, but a lovely evening meal was waiting for us in the restaurant even although it was nearly time to close. We had a large dog with us, and the room allocated on the ground floor of the stables was very spacious, well appointed and had a semi-enclosed garden area with views onto fields, and plenty of places to walk out dog on and off lead. We had to spend a second unbooked night as we had difficulty in arranging suitable car hire transport to take us on to Sweden: the staff could not have been more helpful in arranging continued accommodation for us. The castle and its surrounding buildings are wonderful, and there is an interesting museum illustrating the past history of the castle including (with interest to me as a Scot) its links to Bothwell and Mary Queen of Scots. The restaurant facilities are well deserving of their Michelin Nordic accolade, and the Bistro breakfasts are memorable. One of the nicest places we have ever stayed in!

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike.
