Prestonfield House
First Impressions
Walking up to Prestonfield House honestly feels like you’ve stumbled into some grand Scottish estate that just happens to accept paying guests. This five-star property sits on the edge of Edinburgh with Arthur’s Seat looming dramatically behind it — and I mean, the setting alone is worth the splurge. The baroque architecture and peacocks wandering the grounds (yes, actual peacocks) make you feel like you’re visiting aristocratic relatives rather than checking into a hotel. The grounds themselves are meticulously maintained, creating an atmosphere of timeless elegance.
Location & Getting Around
You know what’s brilliant about this spot? You’re technically outside the city center chaos, but it’s only a ten-minute drive to the Royal Mile. The hotel sits in this peaceful pocket near Holyrood Park, so you can actually walk to Arthur’s Seat if you’re feeling ambitious. There’s parking right on-site too, which honestly saves you a massive headache — anyone who’s tried to park in central Edinburgh knows what I’m talking about. Couples seem to absolutely love the location, and I get it — there’s something romantic about being tucked away but not stranded. The surrounding landscape offers stunning views throughout the seasons.
The Rooms
Each room here is basically a lesson in opulent Scottish design — we’re talking rich tapestries, antique furniture, and these incredible four-poster beds that make you feel like royalty. The beds themselves are ridiculously comfortable (guests rave about the sleep quality), and honestly, after a day of trudging around Edinburgh’s cobblestones, sinking into those luxury linens is pure bliss. The bathrooms are equally dramatic with deep soaking tubs and marble everywhere you look. Modern amenities blend seamlessly with period features throughout.
Dining Experience
The restaurant — Rhubarb — is actually a destination in itself, housed in what used to be the stables. The atmosphere is moody and theatrical, with candlelit tables and this incredible wine list. Breakfast is proper Full English fare, and they do it right — none of that sad continental buffet nonsense. I mean, when you’re paying luxury prices, you want the works, and they deliver. The dining room overlooks the gardens, so you’re watching those peacocks strut around while you eat. The culinary team sources premium local ingredients.
Why Guests Love It
This place nails that perfect balance of grandeur and genuine Scottish hospitality. The staff treat you like you belong there, not like you’re just passing through, and the whole property has this lived-in elegance that feels authentic rather than stuffy. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to hang around the hotel rather than just crash there between sightseeing. Plus, with a 9.6 rating, you know other guests are having the same experience — this isn’t just marketing fluff, it’s the real deal for a truly memorable Edinburgh stay. Every detail reflects the property’s commitment to excellence.

This is my favourite hotel in Edinburgh and have been lucky enough to stay a few times. The decor, staff and attention to detail is outstanding and out of this world. Still pinching myself over last week’s overnight stay where I was upgraded to the resplendent Owners Suite. I cried happy tears at the most beautiful room I have ever stayed in. James...

Location just outside of busy Edinburgh. Beautiful property. Excellent restaurant.

Bedroom was interestingly styled but stuffy and not particularly practical. Price is too high to stay here often.

What a beautiful hotel! The rooms are luxurious, full of character, and beautifully furnished. The gardens are peaceful and perfect for a stroll. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. Great location — you feel far away but you’re just minutes from Edinburgh’s Old Town. Highly recommended!
