Cliveden House – an Iconic Luxury Hotel
First Impressions
Honestly, nothing quite prepares you for that first glimpse of Cliveden House – an Iconic Luxury Hotel as you wind up the tree-lined drive. This five-star estate sits on 376 acres of National Trust grounds overlooking the Thames, and I mean — it’s the kind of place where you half-expect to see horse-drawn carriages instead of cars. The moment you step inside, you realize this isn’t just another country hotel pretending to be grand; it’s the real deal, a proper English manor that’s been hosting royalty and politicians for centuries.
The Equestrian Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse enthusiasts is their partnership with nearby stables — you’re actually staying in prime riding country here in the Thames Valley. The hotel can arrange everything from gentle hacks through Windsor Great Park to more challenging cross-country rides across Burnham Beeches. I loved how the concierge knew exactly which routes suited different skill levels, and honestly, there’s something magical about returning from a morning ride to afternoon tea in those opulent drawing rooms.
Luxury Living
Each room feels like stepping into a different era — mine had original oil paintings, antique furniture that probably cost more than my car, and views across the parterre garden toward the river. The marble bathrooms are spectacular, complete with deep soaking tubs perfect for easing those post-riding muscles. You know what impressed me most though? The staff somehow anticipated every need without being intrusive — fresh riding boots appeared overnight, perfectly polished.
Dining and Indulgence
The André Garrett restaurant is where this place really shows off — Michelin-starred dining in a room that once hosted prime ministers and kings. The seasonal menu changes based on what’s fresh from their kitchen garden, and after a day in the saddle, there’s nothing quite like settling in for a proper seven-course tasting menu. The wine cellar is extraordinary too; they’ve got bottles dating back decades, and the sommelier actually knows the stories behind them.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Taplow might seem like the middle of nowhere, but you’re actually perfectly positioned — twenty minutes to Windsor Castle, half an hour to London, yet completely removed from all that chaos. The spa treatments using their own herb garden ingredients are genuinely restorative after long rides, and there’s something about taking evening strolls through grounds designed by the same person who created Central Park. This isn’t just accommodation; it’s a proper English country house experience that happens to cater brilliantly to equestrian guests. The fact that you might be sleeping in the same suite where Churchill once stayed? Well, that’s just the cherry on top of an already extraordinary experience.

Unmatched customer service and exquisite surroundings. The property has an amazing character and history, it feels like you are stepping back in time but not at the expense of luxury or amenities you would expect at a five star hotel. What could be improved: Due to the nature of the property it can get a little cold in between corridors, but being...
