Gmundner Lodge
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Gmundner Lodge, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect — it’s tucked away on a working farm about 30 minutes outside Windhoek, and the GPS had me second-guessing myself for the last few kilometers. But you know what? That remote location turned out to be exactly what made this place special. This unique boutique hotel sits on Farm Waldburg, and the moment you see those rolling hills dotted with horses, you realize you’ve found something different.
The Riding Experience
The horses here are incredibly well-trained — I mean, they have to be, considering the terrain you’ll be covering. The staff matched me with a calm mare named Luna who seemed to know these trails better than any guide. What struck me was how they actually assess your riding level before putting you on a horse, rather than just asking if you’re “beginner or advanced.” The rides take you through typical Namibian bush country, and on clear days you can see for miles across the Khomas Region’s characteristic landscape.
Accommodation & Atmosphere
My room was in one of their converted farm buildings — rustic but comfortable, with thick stone walls that kept things cool during the day. The whole setup feels authentically Namibian without being touristy about it. There’s no pretense here; it’s a working farm that happens to host guests, not a resort trying to look like a farm. The main lodge area has this great covered veranda where everyone gathers in the evenings, and honestly, some of my best conversations happened there over sundowners.
Dining & Daily Rhythm
The restaurant operates more like a family dining room — meals are served at set times, and you eat what the kitchen prepares that day using local ingredients. I actually loved this approach; the food was hearty German-Namibian fare that made sense after a day in the saddle. Breakfast usually featured fresh eggs from their chickens and homemade bread, while dinners often included game meat or lamb. There’s something satisfying about eating food that comes from the same land you’ve been exploring all day.
Why Guests Love It
What makes Gmundner Lodge work is its complete authenticity — this isn’t a polished resort experience, and that’s exactly the point. You’re staying on a real working farm where horses are part of daily life, not just a tourist activity. The riding here feels purposeful rather than just recreational, and the hospitality comes from genuine Namibian farm tradition rather than hospitality school training. If you’re looking for a riding experience that connects you to the actual landscape and culture of central Namibia, rather than just checking “horseback riding” off your list, this place delivers in a way that surprised me.

Really fabulous. All the staff were very warm and welcoming. The lodge is exceptional, the food is excellent and we had a very relaxing stay. What could be improved: Very little. We enjoyed the morning drive we went on and Ronny was a great guide. There is obviously a pressure from guests to see as many diverse animals as possible which we...

The attention the detail across the property is wonderful! The rooms are decorated and designed to the highest standard as well as the communal areas which make you feel like a home away from home. The food is incredible, a great wine selection and the host at the restaurant (unfortunately we don’t remember his name, but he was from Zimbabwe) was...
