First Impressions
When I pulled up to Château de Courcelles – Relais & Châteaux in the heart of Champagne country, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the quiet village of Courcelles-sur-Vesle. But then you see this 17th-century château rising from perfectly manicured grounds, and — well, it sort of takes your breath away. This four-star property has that authentic French elegance you can’t fake, complete with those classic turrets and ivy-covered stone walls that photographers dream about.
The Setting
The location is actually perfect for exploring Champagne houses — you’re only about 20 minutes from Reims, where all the big names like Veuve Clicquot and Taittinger have their cellars. But what I loved most was how the château sits on 25 hectares of parkland with its own lake. The riding trails wind through ancient forests and rolling hills dotted with vineyards, giving you those postcard views of rural France that make you want to slow down and just breathe.
Equestrian Experience
The stables here aren’t an afterthought — they’re clearly run by people who actually understand horses. I mean, they’ve got about 20 well-trained horses ranging from gentle mounts for beginners to spirited ones for experienced riders. The guided rides through the Champagne countryside are magical, especially the sunset tours where you might spot deer grazing near the vineyard edges. They also offer carriage rides if you’re traveling with someone who prefers to keep their feet firmly planted.
Accommodations & Dining
My room was in the main château — high ceilings, period furniture, and windows that actually open (thank goodness) to let in the country air. The bathrooms are modernized but respectfully done, and there’s free parking right on the grounds, which saves you the hassle of street hunting. The on-site restaurant focuses on regional cuisine, and honestly, their champagne list is impressive — they feature several smaller producers from the area that you won’t find everywhere.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart is how it balances history with comfort without trying too hard. The staff seems to genuinely enjoy sharing local knowledge — they’ll point you toward the best champagne cellars for tastings or suggest scenic routes for your rides. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a long weekend and feel like you’ve really experienced this corner of France, not just passed through it. The 8.4 rating makes sense when you consider you’re getting authentic château living with serious equestrian facilities in one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.

The grounds are wonderful - perfect for dog runs both on the lawns and in the forest. The room was generously proportioned and comfortable.

The breakfast was good, but the service was slow. The dinner was very good with, among other items, a marvelous chicken and beautiful cod with a raspberry sauce.

The historical aura. The grounds were amazing. What could be improved: Slight musty smell. Some of the outside was badly maintained - mainly the entrance doors. We ate at their Michelin starred restaurant. My wife is vegetarian and they had a veggie menu - which was really good. Unfortunately the main course was inedible. A huge pile of uncooked...

The chateau is conveniently situated between Reims and Soissons so an ideal stopping point if travelling across France from east to west or vice versa. It is situated in a small historic village. The staff gave us a short tour of the chateau outlining its long history and walks around its grounds. Our room was full of character in keeping with the...
