Vetera Matera Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Vetera Matera honestly feels like stepping into a beautifully curated dream — you know, the kind where ancient stone meets modern sophistication without trying too hard. This five-star property sits right in the heart of Rione Vetera, which locals will tell you is absolutely the best spot to experience Matera‘s magic. I mean, there’s a reason couples rate this location a perfect 9.9 — you’re literally surrounded by the famous sassi cave dwellings that make this UNESCO World Heritage city so extraordinary.
The Location Magic
What struck me most about staying here is how you can step outside and immediately feel connected to thousands of years of history. The hotel’s position in Rione Vetera means you’re walking distance from the most photogenic spots in the ancient city, but you’re also tucked away enough that it doesn’t feel touristy or overwhelming. Actually, I loved how quiet the evenings were — just the soft sounds of the old city settling in for the night. The luxury here isn’t flashy; it’s more about being perfectly placed to soak up everything Matera offers without the hassle of navigating crowded areas.
Accommodations That Deliver
The room I stayed in was honestly better than I expected, and my expectations were already pretty high given the 9.6 rating. There’s this perfect balance between honoring the historical architecture and providing all the modern comforts you’d want from a luxury hotel. The stone walls tell stories, but the amenities — well, they just work seamlessly. I particularly appreciated how the design felt authentic to Matera rather than like some generic upscale hotel that could be anywhere.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast here is sort of ridiculous in the best way possible. They’ve got everything covered — Continental, Italian, Full English, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, American, and even breakfast to go if you’re planning an early exploration day. What I really loved though was how they incorporated local Basilicata specialties alongside the international options. You can fuel up properly before spending the day wandering through the ancient cave churches and winding stone pathways that make Matera so captivating.
Why Guests Love It
Look, there are plenty of places to stay in Matera, but Vetera Matera gets the fundamentals right in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere. The location score of 9.9 isn’t just a number — it reflects how this place puts you exactly where you want to be without any of the usual compromises. Whether you’re here for the history, the incredible photography opportunities, or just to experience one of Italy’s most unique destinations, this hotel serves as the perfect base camp. It’s luxury that feels earned rather than forced, set in a location that couples consistently rave about for good reason.

Vatera Matera is an absolutely stunning renovation in the Sassi district of Matera. The hotel is subtle but luxurious and immaculate. There is a small spa facility with a spa pool, sauna, steam room, aromatherapy shower and cold plunge pool which is wonderful. The breakfast was delicious. The staff were all attentive, friendly and couldn’t be more...

The hotel is new and super clean, in the middle of the city. It cannot be reached by car, you need to park in a parking provided by hotel and there is a car to take you to the hotel, the service was wonderful and quick. The restaurant is great and the whole experience in Matera was wonderful because of the hotel location, services and staff. What...

Hotel was very impressive! Great breakfast, good location, clean room, nice bed, terrific spa.
What could be improved: We had a Romeo and Juliet massage, and the one massage therapist kept coughing and coughing during the massage. Not sure but my husband came down with Covid a few days later. Maybe the therapist should have worn a mask.

Staff so helpful and friendly, amazing location in the heart of this beautiful town.
What could be improved: We got upgraded to a room with a 'spa bath' but it made the bathroom smell so damp/bad we couldn't use it .. !
