Thornbury Castle – A Relais & Chateaux Hotel Overview
Stepping Into History
Walking through the gates of Thornbury Castle – A Relais & Chateaux Hotel honestly feels like stepping onto a movie set. This isn’t just some modern hotel with castle-themed decor — it’s an actual Tudor castle where Henry VIII once stayed with Anne Boleyn. The five-star property sits right in the heart of Thornbury, and you know what? The moment you see those massive stone walls and turrets, you realize this is going to be completely different from any other hotel experience.
The Royal Treatment
Your room here isn’t just accommodation — it’s like having your own piece of the 16th century, but with all the modern luxuries you actually want. I mean, sleeping in a four-poster bed surrounded by original tapestries and stone walls is pretty incredible, but you’ll also find heated bathroom floors and premium toiletries. The beds are genuinely some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered (other guests clearly agree — they’re consistently rated as exceptional). Each suite has its own character too — some have fireplaces, others overlook the castle’s vineyard, and a few even have their own turret.
Dining Like Royalty
The castle’s restaurant operates in what used to be the Great Hall, complete with vaulted ceilings and suits of armor watching over your meal. Breakfast here is actually quite the production — they offer everything from traditional Full English to vegan and gluten-free options, all served with proper ceremony. The evening dining experience focuses on modern British cuisine using ingredients from their own kitchen garden and vineyard. It’s refined without being stuffy, which honestly can be a fine line to walk in a place this grand.
Grounds and Surroundings
The castle sits on 15 acres of grounds that include England’s northernmost vineyard — something most people don’t expect to find in this part of the country. You can wander through the restored Tudor gardens or just sit by the ancient walls and soak it all in. Parking is completely free and private, which is brilliant since you’re technically staying inside a historic monument. The location works particularly well for couples (they consistently rate it 9.5 out of 10), probably because there’s something undeniably romantic about having a castle mostly to yourselves — there are only 27 rooms total.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to preserve the authentic medieval atmosphere while delivering genuine luxury service. The staff treats you like visiting nobility without the pretentiousness you might expect. You’re staying in a piece of living history — this castle has been continuously inhabited for over 500 years — but you’re not sacrificing comfort for the experience. Plus, being just 20 minutes from Bath and an hour from the Cotswolds means you can use it as a base for exploring some of England’s most beautiful countryside. It’s expensive, sure, but when else will you get to sleep in an actual castle where royalty once walked the same halls?

Absolutely fabulous building. We stayed in the Queen Elizabeth 1st Suite, which was lovely. The staff were very attentive and professional.
The whole building is very well kept too.
What could be improved: The only thing would be the reception area. So many people booking in and out made it a little disorganised.

It's a castle. It's beside a fabulous village. It has sufficient staff. The Chef's / Kitchens are AMAZING! The fresh milk in the room fridge, the complimentary slot gin, all were such beautiful detailed touches. What could be improved: Having to pick a 15 minute time slot to start breakfast the night before. Real luxury is not being on a...

It was all excellent
What could be improved: I understand why from a logistics aspect but we both needed to order the tasting menu at the same time so we went a la carte instead

What could be improved: The food was not good for the price and it was cold when it came out .
