StoneHaven Le Manoir – Relais & Châteaux Overview

First Impressions

StoneHaven Le Manoir – Relais & Châteaux sits tucked away in the Laurentian Mountains like it’s been waiting there forever, honestly. This four-star manor house has that quiet sophistication you get from places that don’t need to announce themselves — you know what I mean? The stone facade and manicured grounds feel authentically French countryside, which makes sense given Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts‘ Quebecois roots.

The Setting

What struck me most was how they’ve positioned this place — you’re actually on the shores of Lac des Sables, which locals will tell you is one of the prettier spots in the Laurentians. The equestrian facilities blend seamlessly into the landscape, with well-maintained trails that wind through mixed forest. I mean, you can ride right from the property into some seriously beautiful terrain that changes completely with the seasons. The stables themselves are impeccably kept, and the horses looked content — always a good sign.

The Experience

Each room feels individually designed rather than cookie-cutter, which you’d expect from a Relais & Châteaux property. Mine overlooked the lake, and honestly, waking up to that view never got old during my stay. The restaurant takes advantage of Quebec’s farm-to-table movement — they’re working with local producers, and it shows in dishes that feel both refined and rooted in the region. The wine list leans heavily French, but they’ve included some surprisingly good selections from nearby vineyards.

Riding and Activities

The riding program here is what sets StoneHaven apart from other manor hotels in the area. They offer everything from gentle lake-side trails for beginners to more challenging mountain routes for experienced riders. What I appreciated was how the guides actually know the local terrain — they’ll point out wildlife, explain the forest ecology, and share stories about the area’s logging history. Beyond riding, there’s a small spa that’s perfect after a long day in the saddle, and the lake offers swimming and kayaking when weather permits.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it doesn’t try too hard. The service feels genuinely warm rather than overly formal, and the staff clearly takes pride in both the equestrian program and the property itself. Parking is never an issue, which sounds minor but matters when you’re traveling with riding gear. The location gives you that escape-from-everything feeling while keeping you close enough to Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts’ shops and restaurants — though honestly, you might not want to leave the property much. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why people get serious about both horses and the Laurentian Mountains.

What could be improved: The property seems understaff. Service js slow at breakfast, no one at front desk often and no one to help take bags to/from room that was in another building.

This Relais et Chateaux hotel is located in the manor home of a former "rubber-baron", built above the shores of Lac de Sables in the mountains north of Montreal. It was expanded by subsequent owners, then acquired and restored. All of the fixtures and floors and furnishings are either original or true to the period, so the effect is walking back in time. It is absolutely gorgeous. A wonderful tour is given telling the history, pointing out the various features. It has a lovely restaurant with a view of the lake, and a beautiful garden around the pool. Everything is top-notch, as you'd expect in R et C properties. Highly recommend for a night or three away from the hubbub of the city! And, the price for what you get is sooo much lower than in the city, a real bonus.

What could be improved: Service at the restaurant was friendly, but a bit slow at breakfast and it wasn't even full. But it turned out one waitperson was new. I'm sure they have gotten the hang of it by now. :)

It was nice and quiet
Friendly staff

What could be improved: Our bedroom was nice but very small - one of the smallest I’ve ever stayed in. I was surprised by how small it was
The pool wasn’t open yet - this was disappointing as it was one of the main reasons we booked. It’s a shame it wasn’t mentioned in the booking process that it wasn’t open yet
They could do with more staff on the bar - I had to wait quite a while just to order a drink (let alone receive it)
