Prestonfield House Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Prestonfield House honestly feels like stepping into a period drama — and I mean that in the best possible way. This five-star manor sits on the edge of Edinburgh, surrounded by peacocks strutting across manicured lawns like they own the place (which, frankly, they sort of do). The baroque architecture hits you immediately, but it’s the small details that really get you — like the way afternoon light catches the leaded windows, or how you can hear Arthur’s Seat calling from just beyond the gardens.
The Luxury Experience
Each room here is basically a masterclass in opulent design. We’re talking hand-painted ceilings, antique furnishings that would make museum curators weep, and tapestries that probably have more history than most castles. The beds are ridiculously comfortable — the kind where you actually resent your alarm clock. What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend all this historical grandeur with modern luxury touches without it feeling forced or overdone.
Dining and Atmosphere
The restaurant deserves its own paragraph because, well, it’s spectacular. Rhubarb serves up this incredible mix of Scottish cuisine with international flair, all in a dining room that feels like dining in a wealthy aristocrat’s private collection. The wine list is extensive, and honestly, even if you’re not usually a foodie, you’ll find yourself lingering over dinner just to soak up the atmosphere. The service strikes that perfect balance between attentive and unobtrusive.
Location and Surroundings
Here’s what’s brilliant about the location — you’re technically in Edinburgh, but it feels like you’ve escaped to some private estate in the countryside. Holyrood Park is literally your backyard, which means incredible walks and that postcard-perfect view of the city. You can be in the Royal Mile in about ten minutes by car, but honestly, between the peacocks, the grounds, and the general sense of stepping back in time, you might not want to leave. There’s parking on-site too, which anyone who’s tried to park in central Edinburgh will appreciate.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t just accommodation — it’s an experience that stays with you. The staff genuinely seem to care about making your stay memorable, whether that’s arranging a private tour of the whisky collection or just making sure your morning coffee is perfect. The combination of historical significance, luxury amenities, and that uniquely Scottish sense of hospitality creates something really special. Plus, when you’re telling people where you stayed in Edinburgh, “oh, we stayed at the 17th-century baroque mansion with the peacocks” never gets old.

This is my favourite hotel in Edinburgh and have been lucky enough to stay a few times. The decor, staff and attention to detail is outstanding and out of this world. Still pinching myself over last week’s overnight stay where I was upgraded to the resplendent Owners Suite. I cried happy tears at the most beautiful room I have ever stayed in. James...

Location just outside of busy Edinburgh. Beautiful property. Excellent restaurant.
What could be improved: Bedroom was interestingly styled but stuffy and not particularly practical. Price is too high to stay here often.

What a beautiful hotel! The rooms are luxurious, full of character, and beautifully furnished. The gardens are peaceful and perfect for a stroll. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. Great location — you feel far away but you’re just minutes from Edinburgh’s Old Town. Highly recommended!
