La Maison 20 Degrés Sud – Relais & Châteaux Overview
First Impressions
You know what hits you first at La Maison 20 Degrés Sud – Relais & Châteaux? It’s not just the stunning oceanfront location — though that’s pretty spectacular — it’s how intimate everything feels despite being a five-star property. This luxury boutique hotel sits right on Pointe Malartic in Grand Baie, and honestly, it feels more like staying at an impossibly elegant friend’s beach house than a traditional resort. The staff knows your name by day two, and the whole place has this relaxed sophistication that’s hard to find.
The Equestrian Experience
Here’s where things get interesting for horse lovers — the hotel partners with nearby stables that offer some of the most incredible beach riding I’ve experienced in Mauritius. You’ll actually ride along the northern coastline at sunrise, and I mean, the combination of Indian Ocean views and well-trained horses makes for something pretty magical. The concierge arranges everything seamlessly, from transportation to the stables to matching you with the right horse based on your experience level. What I appreciated most was how they connected me with local guides who knew the best trails through sugar cane fields and coastal paths.
Accommodation & Dining
Each room here feels like its own private sanctuary — mine had this gorgeous terrace overlooking the lagoon, and the design strikes this perfect balance between contemporary luxury and local Mauritian influences. The bathrooms are ridiculously spacious, and you’ve got all the high-end amenities you’d expect from a Relais & Châteaux property. The restaurant focuses on fresh seafood and Creole-inspired cuisine, and their breakfast spread is honestly one of the best I’ve had — local tropical fruits, fresh pastries, and they make a mean eggs Benedict with a slight curry twist that shouldn’t work but absolutely does.
Location & Activities
Grand Baie is basically the heart of Mauritius’s northern coast, and this hotel puts you right in the sweet spot — close enough to explore the town’s markets and nightlife, but far enough removed to feel like you’re in your own little world. The beach here isn’t huge, but it’s pristine and rarely crowded since it’s primarily for hotel guests. When you’re not riding, there’s excellent snorkeling right off the shore, and the hotel can arrange sailing trips to nearby islands. The spa treatments incorporate local ingredients like vanilla and frangipani, which sounds gimmicky but actually feels pretty authentic.
Why Guests Love It
I think what sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both luxurious and genuinely Mauritian — not like some generic tropical resort that could be anywhere. The riding experiences are properly curated rather than just tacked on, and the property itself has this understated elegance that grows on you. You’re paying premium prices, sure, but for riders looking for that perfect blend of equestrian adventure and beachfront luxury, it’s actually worth it. Plus, the location gives you easy access to explore the rest of the island when you want a change of pace from beach and stable time.

Gorgeous property that feels almost secluded from everything else. You wouldn’t even expect to arrive through a normal side street. The moment you walk in, everything is elegant and welcoming. Love the fact that it isn’t a big resort. Rooms are big, exquisitely done and well sized. Facilities are well kept and the staff are incredibly pleasant. ...
Eva from Namibia (19 October 2025)
The room, ocean views and the beach setup was lovely. The music as dinner gave a nice atmosphere. What could be improved: The dinner service was disappointing. We waited a long time to be served on both nights. We were never presented with a wine list or offered drinks other than water when we were seated. We had to ask for drinks on both nights...

Beautiful hotel, not too big (fewer rooms than in big resorts), amazing restaurant. Secluded beach. Amazing ambiance. Service was great.

Delicious buffet breakfast. Huge dinner menu with a set three course menu for every day of the week which can be combined with courses from a la carte menu. Works on a credit basis if on HB which gives great flexibility of choice. Lovely staff throughout the hotel. Gorgeous bedrooms (very comfortable beds)with roll top baths and outdoor showers...
Ingrid from United Kingdom (20 March 2025)
Beautiful location on the outskirts of Grand Baie with its own private beach area. Unique, chalet style rooms with large bathroom, outside shower and small patio area. Fabulous restaurant serving delicious local and French inspired cuisine. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. Afternoon tea and cakes. Hotel shuttle boat across the bay to...
