La Chapelle Saint Martin
First Impressions
You know what struck me first about La Chapelle Saint Martin? It’s actually housed in a beautifully restored chapel — I mean, how often do you get to sleep in a place with that kind of history? This four-star property sits in the quiet village of Saint Martin du Fault, just outside Nieul, and honestly, the setting feels almost magical when you pull up the gravel drive.
The Equestrian Experience
The horse riding here is genuinely something special — they’ve got well-trained horses and several scenic trails that wind through the Limousin countryside. What I loved most was how they tailor the rides to your experience level, whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who’s been in the saddle for years. The instructors actually know the local terrain like the back of their hands, taking you through ancient oak forests and past stone farmhouses that look like they haven’t changed in centuries.
Accommodations and Atmosphere
My room had this wonderful blend of rustic charm and modern comfort — exposed stone walls but with all the amenities you’d expect from a quality hotel. The chapel’s original architecture creates these unique spaces; some rooms have vaulted ceilings that make you feel like you’re sleeping in a piece of history. There’s parking right on the property, which is handy since you’ll probably want to explore the surrounding villages during your stay.
Dining and Local Flavors
The on-site restaurant serves traditional Limousin cuisine with a contemporary twist — their lamb dishes are particularly memorable, sourced from local farms just down the road. Breakfast is served in what used to be the main chapel space, and there’s something quite peaceful about starting your day surrounded by those ancient stone walls. The staff really knows their local wines too, which pairs beautifully with the regional specialties.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. The 9.3 rating reflects what I experienced — solid hospitality, excellent horses, and a setting that feels both authentic and comfortable. You’re close enough to Limoges if you want city amenities, but far enough away that you actually feel like you’ve escaped to the French countryside. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself lingering over dinner just because the atmosphere is so relaxed and genuine.

The house is beautiful and our room was lovely. The staff were very professional, but also very friendly. The food was exceptional - as were the staff in the restaurant.
Could be improved
This is obviously a hotel run by a restaurateur, so the emphasis is on the food, with a few small things missing from the room.

Staff were fabulous in each department: reception, bar, waitressing. In particular the lovely young lady with the red hair (sorry forgotten her name) and the sommelier. Cocktail, restaurant meal and the breakfast were absolutely perfect, fresh produce, creative and generous. The garden walks were a bonus.

The location suited me perfectly for my journey from Spain to home in the UK. The provision for my dog was brilliant. Bed and bowls provided and wonderful parkland for him to run about in. It’s a lovely hotel. What could be improved: I thought the breakfast was pricey. 30€ for a croissant, yogurt and coffee. Of course I could have had more but...

A beautiful chateaux and gardens with amazing food and charming staff
Could be improved
There were a few small areas of wear and tear in our bedroom- chipped paint, loose fittings etc - but nothing more than you would expect from a busy well occupied business
