L’Auberge Carmel, Relais & Chateaux Overview
First Impressions
Walking into L’Auberge Carmel, Relais & Chateaux feels like stumbling upon someone’s impossibly chic countryside estate — if that someone happened to have impeccable taste and a thing for European charm. This four-star boutique property sits right in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect for exploring both the village’s fairy-tale streets and the equestrian trails that wind through the nearby hills. The whole place has this understated elegance that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special.
The Riding Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse enthusiasts is its proximity to some of California’s most stunning riding terrain. The concierge — and I mean this — actually knows the local stables and can arrange everything from beach rides along the coast to mountain trail adventures through Point Lobos. The staff connected me with guides who’ve been riding these trails for decades, which made all the difference. You’re maybe ten minutes from several excellent facilities, and the hotel’s relationship with local outfitters means you’ll get the good horses, not the tired ones they give to random tourists.
The Room
My room had this cozy, residential feel that’s pretty rare in hotels these days — think exposed beams, a stone fireplace, and windows that actually open to let in that incredible Monterey Peninsula air. The bathrooms are generous (important after a day in the saddle), and there’s enough space to spread out your gear without feeling cramped. What I appreciated most was the attention to comfort — the beds are seriously good, which matters when your muscles are reminding you of that morning’s canter.
Dining and Atmosphere
The hotel’s restaurant, Aubergine, deserves its reputation, though I’ll warn you — it’s the kind of place where dinner becomes an event. Chef Justin Cogley sources incredibly locally, and after spending the day exploring the countryside on horseback, there’s something satisfying about eating ingredients that probably grew within a few miles of where you rode. The wine list focuses heavily on nearby vintners, which feels right given how much time you’ll spend touring the region. Honestly, the whole dining experience complements the equestrian theme beautifully — it’s all about connecting with the landscape.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Carmel can feel touristy, but this place manages to feel like an insider’s secret even when it’s busy. The staff treats riding guests like they get it — they’ll arrange early breakfast if you’ve got a dawn ride planned, and they’re genuinely helpful about parking trailers if you’re bringing your own horses. It’s the kind of place where you can spend three days and feel like you’ve experienced both sophisticated hospitality and authentic California horse country. Plus, you’re walking distance from the village’s galleries and shops, so non-riding companions won’t feel left out.

Very charming and cozy decor, it was winter so the tent was up in the courtyard which was slightly an eye sore but the staff was very attentive and helpful. Loved how small and quiet it was.
What could be improved: The outdoor area was covered by a large tent.
