First Impressions
Walking into Hôtel Richer De Belleval – Relais & Châteaux feels like discovering a well-kept secret in the heart of Montpellier. The Place de la Carnougue location puts you right in one of the city’s most charming squares — honestly, I wasn’t expecting such an intimate setting for a five-star property. The building itself has this understated elegance that screams luxury without being flashy about it, which is exactly what you’d want from a Relais & Châteaux property.
The Neighborhood
You know what I love about this spot? It’s tucked away from the main tourist crowds but still walkable to everything that matters. The old town’s winding streets are literally at your doorstep, and you can reach the tram system in about three minutes if you need to venture further out. I mean, Montpellier isn’t huge, but having that central position makes such a difference when you’re planning day trips to the Camargue for horseback riding — which is probably why you’re here anyway.
Accommodations & Amenities
The rooms here are something else — each one feels more like staying in a sophisticated private residence than a hotel room. The design strikes this perfect balance between contemporary comfort and regional character, with those high ceilings and natural light that southern French buildings do so well. There’s actually a small spa tucked away that most guests seem to miss, but it’s worth seeking out after a long day in the saddle.
Dining Experience
The hotel’s restaurant surprised me — and I don’t say that lightly. Chef focuses on local ingredients (you’ll taste the difference in everything from the olive oil to the wine selection), and there’s this seasonal menu that actually changes based on what’s available from nearby producers. Parking can be a bit tricky in this part of town, but the hotel sorts that out for you, which removes one headache from the equation.
Why Horse Enthusiasts Love It
Here’s the thing about this place that really works for equestrian travelers — the concierge team actually knows the local riding scene. They’ve got connections with several excellent stables within a 30-minute drive, including some that specialize in Camargue horses and beach rides. The staff genuinely understands that you might need earlier breakfast times or flexible check-in schedules when you’re coordinating with riding instructors, which isn’t something you get at every luxury hotel.

Beautiful renovated hotel in a wonderful location. Excellent bar and restaurants. The staff were lovely, the room was exceptional. The art throughout the hotel phenomenal. The bar has to be one of the most beautiful bars I’ve been in.

Everything. Adrian was so helpful, professional and welcoming. Dinner was fabulous and we especially appreciated the later check out to enable us to see the Beaux Arts Museum on Tuesday morning (it was closed on Monday when we planned our visit). This is truly s luxury 5 star hotel and well worth it. We recommend it and will be back. What could be...
