Hastings House Country House Hotel
First Impressions
You know that feeling when you pull up somewhere and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first saw Hastings House Country House Hotel tucked away on Upper Ganges Road. This four-star property sits on Salt Spring Island like it’s been there forever — which, honestly, adds to its charm. The Tudor-style manor house catches your eye first, but then you notice how the whole place seems to breathe with the surrounding forest and gardens. It’s the kind of spot where you actually slow down before you even check in.
The Island Setting
Salt Spring Island isn’t your typical hotel destination, and that’s precisely why Hastings House works so well. Getting here means taking a ferry from Vancouver or Victoria, which already puts you in vacation mode before you arrive. The hotel sits on 22 acres of what I can only describe as Pacific Northwest perfection — think towering Douglas firs, manicured English gardens, and glimpses of Ganges Harbour through the trees. Ganges village is just a short walk away, but honestly, once you’re on the property, you might not feel like leaving. The location consistently gets top ratings from guests, and I get why — it strikes that perfect balance between secluded retreat and accessible charm.
Accommodations That Actually Feel Special
The rooms here aren’t cookie-cutter hotel boxes, which is refreshing. I stayed in one of the manor house rooms, and the attention to detail was impressive — we’re talking antique furnishings that don’t feel stuffy, fireplaces that actually work, and views that make you want to sit by the window with coffee for way too long. Some accommodations are in separate cottages scattered around the property, which couples seem to love (and I can see why — the privacy factor is real). The bathrooms are well-appointed without being over-the-top, and you’ll find those little touches that show someone actually thought about what guests might need.
Dining Worth Planning Around
The restaurant at Hastings House deserves its own mention because, well, it’s not your typical hotel dining room. They focus on local ingredients — and I mean truly local, like Salt Spring Island lamb and seafood that was probably swimming yesterday. The dining room overlooks the harbour, and if you time dinner right, you’ll catch one of those Pacific Northwest sunsets that makes you understand why people move here. Breakfast is included and actually substantial — none of that continental breakfast disappointment. The service feels personal rather than corporate, which fits the whole vibe of the place.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both polished and genuinely relaxing. The 9.7 rating isn’t just numbers — you can feel it in how the staff remembers your name, how quiet the property stays despite being well-occupied, and how every corner seems designed for actually unwinding. Couples rate it especially highly, and after spending time here, that makes complete sense. It’s romantic without trying too hard, sophisticated without being intimidating. Plus, Salt Spring Island itself becomes part of the experience — the local markets, artisan studios, and hiking trails all feel like natural extensions of your stay at Hastings House.
Horse riding hotels line rolling countryside, vineyard estates, and forest trails across fourteen countries.

The service was excellent. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The homemade muffins every morning was an excellent touch. Coffee and warmed muffins on the deck was the best!.

Hastings House is beautiful, and the people who run it are lovely. We stayed in the Willow Suite, which was fabulous. I was particularly captivated by all the hummingbirds outside the breakfast area
