Grand Hôtel du Lion d’Or Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Grand Hôtel du Lion d’Or on rue Georges Clemenceau, you immediately get that classic French provincial hotel feeling — you know, the kind where everything feels polished but lived-in at the same time. This four-star property sits right in the heart of Romorantin, and honestly, it’s one of those places that looks like it’s been welcoming travelers for decades while somehow keeping everything feeling fresh. The golden lion emblem above the entrance gives you a hint of what’s inside — traditional elegance without being stuffy about it.
The Equestrian Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse enthusiasts is how naturally they’ve woven riding into the whole experience. The staff actually knows their way around horses — I mean, they can talk breeding, discuss local trail conditions, and they’ve got solid connections with nearby stables in the Sologne region. The parking area accommodates horse trailers without any fuss, and they’ll arrange everything from gentle trail rides through the forests to more challenging cross-country adventures. You can tell they’ve been doing this for years because nothing feels rushed or touristy.
Location and Local Charm
Romorantin itself is this lovely little town that most tourists zip right past on their way to the châteaux, which is honestly their loss. From the hotel, you can walk to the Saturday market in about three minutes, and there’s this fantastic bakery just around the corner that does these incredible pain au chocolat. The Sologne countryside starts practically at your doorstep — all those mysterious forests and étangs (ponds) that make this region perfect for riding. It’s close enough to Chambord and Cheverny if you want to do the castle thing, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with tour bus chaos.
Rooms and Comfort
My room had that perfect balance of French traditional style and actual modern comfort — none of that “charming” plumbing that barely works. The beds are genuinely comfortable (important after a day in the saddle), and the bathrooms are updated without losing the character. Some rooms overlook the courtyard, others face the street, but honestly, Romorantin’s pretty quiet so street noise isn’t really an issue. There’s good Wi-Fi throughout, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to plan riding routes or check weather conditions.
Why Guests Love It
The restaurant serves proper regional cuisine — we’re talking Sologne game, local fish from the rivers, and wines that pair beautifully with everything. The staff treats horse people like regular guests, not some exotic species, which is refreshing. What really wins people over is how they handle the practical stuff — muddy boots, wet gear, early breakfast for those dawn rides — without making you feel like you’re causing trouble. It’s got that 8.4 rating because it delivers on what it promises: a genuine French hotel experience that happens to understand horses really well.

We stayed at this hotel because we were recommended the restaurant. It did not disappoint. Absolutely perfect; beautifully presented courses, imaginative perfection. Staff were brilliant and knowledgeable. Very much looking forward to returning…….Bravo! Grand Hotel du Lion d’Or

What could be improved: Was given ‘large’ bed but, in fact, two singles pushed together which made a very hard centre strip where joined. Uncomfortable. Awkward stair configuration to get to room. Not good for someone older or with suitcase. WiFi was awful. Could not communicate with USA, 7hrs behind. And reception closed after 11pm. Very...

Lovely old property in an interesting small town with waterways and historic buildings Petrol heads will love the 5* Matra Museum less than ten minutes away. Our wives loved just strolling but didn’t get to the regional museum although it looked fascinating
The restaurant is exceptional with charming staff

Great traditional venue. Very quirky inside. The courtyard used as a restaurant was superb as was the food and service.
What could be improved: The common areas such as lounge were very dark with no lights on. I understand electricity is expensive but having everything off made it feel a bit unwelcoming.

One of my favourite hotels anywhere in the world. Such personal, kind service and so welcoming. The bathroom facilities and lack of iron and ironing board were bizarre in such a lovely hotel but it wasn't a huge inconvenience as we only stayed one night. Dinner, as ever, was mindblowingly good. One of the best restaurants in France. What could...

Helene was a delight. She was personal, warm, and genuine making our stay truly memorable. We dined at the restaurant that evening and had the most enjoyable three hour dining experience; unforgettable.... c'est magnifique!

Un peu leger. Il faudrait davantage de pain et de beurre. Cafe et the corrects.
