Castello Di Vicarello

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Castello Di Vicarello, I honestly thought I’d taken a wrong turn somewhere in the Tuscan countryside. This isn’t your typical hotel — it’s actually a restored medieval castle that sits on a hill overlooking endless olive groves and vineyards. The approach alone, winding through cypress-lined roads, feels like you’re driving into a Renaissance painting. You know what struck me most? How quiet it was, with nothing but the sound of wind through the trees and maybe some distant church bells from the village below.

The Setting

Located near the tiny hamlet of Sasso d’Ombrone, this place is genuinely remote in the best possible way. I mean, you’re about 45 minutes from the coast and maybe an hour from Siena, but it feels like you’ve escaped to your own private corner of Tuscany. The castle sits on 700 acres of working farmland — they actually produce their own wine and olive oil right here. During my stay, I’d watch the sun set over the Maremma region from the terrace, and honestly, it never got old.

The Room Experience

Each room here is different because, well, you’re staying in a castle that dates back to the 12th century. Mine had stone walls that were probably three feet thick, original wooden beams, and windows that looked out over the estate’s vineyards. The furnishings strike this perfect balance between medieval character and modern comfort — think antique furniture but with excellent Wi-Fi and a bathroom that actually works. The beds are seriously comfortable, which I wasn’t entirely expecting in a historic property like this.

Dining and Hospitality

The Aurelia family has owned this four-star castle for generations, and you can tell they genuinely care about their guests’ experience. Their restaurant serves ingredients grown right on the property — the tomatoes in my pasta were probably picked that morning. Breakfast is served on the terrace when weather permits, and there’s something magical about starting your day with fresh ricotta and honey while looking out over the Tuscan hills. The wine they produce here is actually quite good too — I ended up buying a few bottles to take home.

Why Guests Love It

What makes Castello Di Vicarello special isn’t just the stunning setting or the historic architecture — it’s the sense that you’re experiencing authentic Tuscany rather than some tourist version of it. The staff treats you like family friends, the food comes from the land around you, and you fall asleep to absolute silence. Sure, it’s not cheap, and you’ll definitely need a car to get around, but if you want to disconnect from the world and live like Tuscan nobility for a few days, this place delivers. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been here.
