Castello Di Vicarello Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Castello Di Vicarello, I honestly thought I’d taken a wrong turn somewhere in the Tuscan countryside. This isn’t your typical hotel — it’s actually a restored medieval castle that sits on a hill overlooking endless olive groves and vineyards. The approach alone, winding through cypress-lined roads, feels like you’re driving into a Renaissance painting. You know what struck me most? How quiet it was, with nothing but the sound of wind through the trees and maybe some distant church bells from the village below.

The Setting

Located near the tiny hamlet of Sasso d’Ombrone, this place is genuinely remote in the best possible way. I mean, you’re about 45 minutes from the coast and maybe an hour from Siena, but it feels like you’ve escaped to your own private corner of Tuscany. The castle sits on 700 acres of working farmland — they actually produce their own wine and olive oil right here. During my stay, I’d watch the sun set over the Maremma region from the terrace, and honestly, it never got old.

The Room Experience

Each room here is different because, well, you’re staying in a castle that dates back to the 12th century. Mine had stone walls that were probably three feet thick, original wooden beams, and windows that looked out over the estate’s vineyards. The furnishings strike this perfect balance between medieval character and modern comfort — think antique furniture but with excellent Wi-Fi and a bathroom that actually works. The beds are seriously comfortable, which I wasn’t entirely expecting in a historic property like this.

Dining and Hospitality

The Aurelia family has owned this four-star castle for generations, and you can tell they genuinely care about their guests’ experience. Their restaurant serves ingredients grown right on the property — the tomatoes in my pasta were probably picked that morning. Breakfast is served on the terrace when weather permits, and there’s something magical about starting your day with fresh ricotta and honey while looking out over the Tuscan hills. The wine they produce here is actually quite good too — I ended up buying a few bottles to take home.

Why Guests Love It

What makes Castello Di Vicarello special isn’t just the stunning setting or the historic architecture — it’s the sense that you’re experiencing authentic Tuscany rather than some tourist version of it. The staff treats you like family friends, the food comes from the land around you, and you fall asleep to absolute silence. Sure, it’s not cheap, and you’ll definitely need a car to get around, but if you want to disconnect from the world and live like Tuscan nobility for a few days, this place delivers. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been here.

This was one of the most incredible places I have ever had the pleasure of staying. It was the first stop on my honeymoon and it did not disappoint. The food was exceptional, the atmosphere was exactly what you picture Tuscany to be, the decor was well thought out and not one corner was missed. It was the epitome of a Tuscan dream and it was clear the family run castle was curated thoughtfully. The staff were incredibly professional, friendly, accommodating and you can't help but feel that you are at a home away from home. They also have a dog named Uva who roams around the grounds! She is a sweetheart and a wonderful addition to the stay. I will 100% be going back there and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!!

What could be improved: There was not one bad thing I could say about this stay. I was looking for peace and quiet, a little retreat far away from the city. It was about a 30 minute drive to a small town and 1 hr away from anything other busy areas.

Castello Di Vicarello was a dream! The staff went above and beyond to make our trip memorable and relaxing. The wine tasting was an incredible experience, and the grounds were breathtaking! The food was also incredible.

What could be improved: There was nothing that they could of done better.

The whole hotel was just a dream with the rustic charm of the castle against such a beautiful backdrop of the Tuscany hills. The stay was made all the more memorable with the extraordinary service from all the staff. Because it’s only a few suites and thus less hotel guests, everything was very personalised. We were well taken care of(and more!!)...

The whole hotel was just a dream with the rustic charm of the castle against such a beautiful backdrop of the Tuscany hills. The stay was made all the more memorable with the extraordinary service from all the staff. Because it’s only a few suites and thus less hotel guests, everything was very personalised. We were well taken care of(and more!!) during the entire stay. They very kindly helped to change the tyre of the car (it was punctured on the way to the hotel); even cleaned the car’s service, and placed extra water bottles too in the car for our subsequent journeys. everyone was so friendly!! Restaurant was really beautiful with the transparent windows, and we had the pleasure of live music too for one of the dinners. Room was spacious and so pretty. I loved the marble floors of the bathroom. So perfect!

What could be improved: Pool was unfortunately too cold during the early Spring season but we did hear that a second heated pool would be ready soon (after our stay)!
