Amberley Castle- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Amberley Castle- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel genuinely feels like stepping into a medieval fairy tale — and I mean that in the best possible way. This isn’t some theme park recreation; it’s an actual 900-year-old castle with battlements, a portcullis, and everything you’d expect from a proper fortress. The fact that you can actually sleep here still amazes me, honestly.
The Setting
What struck me most was how perfectly preserved everything feels in this corner of West Sussex. Amberley village itself is tiny — barely a few cottages clustered around the castle — but that’s exactly what makes it special. You’re tucked into the South Downs, surrounded by rolling countryside that looks pretty much unchanged since medieval times. The restaurant overlooks these grounds, and you can actually walk along the castle walls after dinner, which is something you don’t get to do every day.
Staying in History
The rooms are where this four-star castle really shows its character. Each room is different — some have four-poster beds tucked under exposed beams, others feature stone walls that are literally centuries old. I’ll be honest, the plumbing and heating work perfectly fine (thank goodness), but you definitely feel the history around you. My favorite detail? Some windows still have those deep stone sills where medieval guards once kept watch.
Equestrian Adventures
Here’s what horse enthusiasts need to know — the castle works with local stables to arrange rides through the South Downs, and the countryside here is absolutely perfect for it. You’re looking at ancient bridleways that wind through woods and across open downs, with views that stretch for miles. The staff actually knows the area well enough to suggest routes based on your riding level, which I appreciated. After a day in the saddle, there’s something deeply satisfying about returning to an actual castle.
Why Guests Love It
What makes this place work isn’t just the novelty of sleeping in a castle (though that’s undeniably cool). It’s that they’ve managed to preserve the authentic medieval atmosphere while making it genuinely comfortable. The dining is excellent — proper country house cooking with modern touches — and the staff treats the castle’s history with the respect it deserves. There’s parking within the castle walls, which feels wonderfully surreal when you’re pulling up next to 12th-century stonework. You know what really sealed it for me? Sitting by the fire in the Great Hall after a day exploring the downs, feeling like I’d genuinely stepped back in time.
