Honestly, Alex Lake Zürich caught me off guard — in the best possible way. I mean, you’re expecting luxury at a five-star property, but this place actually delivers it without feeling stuffy or pretentious. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve found something special, and the staff genuinely seems excited to help you plan your equestrian adventures around Lake Zurich.

Location & Setting

What struck me most about Zürich is how quickly you can escape the city buzz — Alex Lake Zürich sits right on Seestrasse in Thalwil, and you’re literally steps from the lake. The hotel connects you with some incredible riding trails that wind through the Swiss countryside, and I discovered that many of the local stables offer guided rides that take you up into the hills overlooking the water. You know what’s really nice? The train connections from here make it super easy to explore other riding areas if you want to venture further out.

Accommodations & Amenities

My room had this gorgeous lake view, and I spent way too much time just watching the boats drift by while planning my next ride. The luxury here feels understated — beautiful materials, attention to detail, but nothing too flashy. There’s a spa that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day in the saddle, and the restaurant serves this amazing mix of Swiss and international cuisine that actually fueled my riding adventures perfectly.

The Equestrian Experience

Here’s where things get really interesting — the hotel staff knows the local riding scene inside and out. They connected me with Reitschule Thalwil, which is basically around the corner, and helped arrange rides that ranged from gentle lakeside trails to more challenging mountain paths. I actually ended up doing a half-day ride through the Sihl Valley that I never would have discovered on my own, and the views were absolutely stunning.

What could be improved: The central cooling didn’t work at all, nor did the ventilation, so we had to keep the window open — which was unpleasant, as the balcony light attracted flies and other insects from outside.

The fitness room is more decorative than functional. Investing in a single set of heavier dumbbells would at least provide basic workout options for 90% of guests. As it is, it’s only suitable for about 10%.

We received a voucher for a welcome drink, but even though there were two of us, it turned out to be valid for only one person — so we ended up paying €7.50 for a Coca-Cola. It’s rather strange to be saving money on a guest who spent over €2,500 at the hotel. It would be better not to offer such a voucher at all than to set such humiliating conditions for customers.
