Shell Campground Overview
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Shell Campground on 1st Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name suggests something pretty basic, but this place is actually a clever reinvention of what a roadside stop can be. It’s got this authentic Western charm that feels genuine rather than touristy — you know, the kind of place where locals might actually hang out too.
Location & Setting
Shell itself is one of those tiny Wyoming towns you’d drive right through without noticing, but that’s actually part of the appeal here. You’re nestled in the Bighorn Basin with some pretty dramatic landscape all around, and the silence at night is something you don’t get in most places. The Bighorn Mountains are right there, and if you’re into hiking or just want to escape the usual hotel scene, this spot works really well as a base.
The Accommodations
The room I stayed in had this rustic-meets-modern thing going on that surprised me. They’ve kept the authentic feel but added touches like decent Wi-Fi and updated bathrooms that actually work properly. The beds are comfortable enough, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to be fancy but gets the basics right. Plus, you can hear the wind at night, which is oddly relaxing if you’re used to city noise.
Practical Details
What I appreciated is that they understand travelers’ real needs. Parking is easy and right outside your door — no wandering around with your luggage. The staff knows the area well and can point you toward decent food options (Shell doesn’t have a ton, but there are a couple of spots worth trying). They’ve also got that small-town hospitality thing down without being overwhelming about it.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re doing a road trip through Wyoming or exploring the Bighorn area, Shell Campground offers something different. It’s the kind of place where you actually sleep well because it’s quiet, and you wake up feeling like you’ve experienced a slice of real Wyoming rather than generic hotel land. The 8.8 rating makes sense — people come here knowing what they’re getting and leave pleasantly surprised by how well it delivers on that promise.

We rented the cabin and it was just wonderful for our group of five. Though it does not provide privacy, it is an ideal cabin for a family or group that is very well acquainted. The kitchen was well-supplied and offered ample ability to cook. The bathroom was very clean, large, and offered a great shower experience. The manager was extremely...

Quaint and clean
What could be improved: My packet wasn't in the box and office was closed at 230 pm when I got there. Luckily the maintenance lady was there.

Location was awesome. Cabin was cozy. Easy to check in and out. We were late arriving yet staff was friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend the facility. We hope to return for another stay. What could be improved: The radiant heat was not working in our cabin. Staff however did provide a stand alone heater. It was cold regardless. Did...

We LOVED EVERYTHING!! Exceptionally clean facilities, immaculately cared for property. Friendly people, dog friendly. Comfortable rustic bed. We're on a just retired road trip, stopping at places we've been wanting to go. The glamping tent was PERFECT to be off the grid, no TV, peace and quiet snuggled under blankets listening to the light rain...
