First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to High Country Villa 239 – Canterbury Terrace Downs, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a villa tucked away on Coleridge Road. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that don’t scream for attention. This four-star property sits quietly in the Canterbury countryside, and there’s something refreshingly understated about the whole setup that immediately puts you at ease.
Location & Setting
The thing about Hororata is that most people just drive through it on their way somewhere else, but that’s actually what makes this spot so appealing. You’re genuinely in the middle of Canterbury’s high country here — I mean, the Rakaia River is practically on your doorstep, and the Southern Alps create this incredible backdrop that changes throughout the day. The Terrace Downs Golf Resort is right there too, which explains why the whole area has this sort of peaceful, retreat-like vibe going on.
The Villa Experience
What really struck me about this place is how it manages to feel both spacious and cozy at the same time. The room setup is thoughtfully designed — you’ve got proper space to spread out without feeling like you’re rattling around in some oversized holiday rental. The kitchen area is well-equipped (honestly better than some apartments I’ve stayed in), and there’s this nice flow between the living spaces that makes it feel like an actual home rather than just accommodation.
Activities & Surroundings
If you’re into outdoor stuff, this location is pretty hard to beat. The golf course is obvious, but what I really loved was how easy it is to explore the wider Canterbury region from here. You can drive to Arthur’s Pass in about an hour, or head down to Methven if you’re here during ski season. Even just walking around the immediate area gives you this proper sense of New Zealand’s high country landscape — it’s that rolling farmland punctuated by dramatic mountain views that postcards are made of.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find a fancy spa or multiple dining options, but that’s sort of the point. What you get instead is genuine peace and quiet, plus the freedom to explore one of New Zealand’s most scenic regions at your own pace. The parking is straightforward (no city hassles here), and you’re close enough to Christchurch that day trips are totally doable, but far enough away that you actually feel like you’ve escaped. For couples looking for a proper getaway or anyone who wants to experience Canterbury beyond the usual tourist trail, Villa 239 delivers exactly what it promises — no more, no less.

We were originally sent the incorrect door code and took 3 phone calls to the property manager to obtain the correct code

Location was perfect with stunning views of the snow capped mountains. Room was quiet and warm. We did have a slight mishap locking ourselves outside accidentally, we were able to contact the host and have this resolved within 5 minutes, great service.

The view is priceless. Comfortable living room, perfect for small group to hang out. Had most things we needed.

Didn’t expect there were some stairs between the Carpark and the house, might not be ideal for people who have large luggages or immobile.
