The Gleneagles Hotel
First Impressions
Honestly, nothing quite prepares you for the moment you drive up to The Gleneagles Hotel through the Perthshire countryside. This five-star estate sprawls across 850 acres of Scottish moorland, and I mean sprawls — it’s more like a luxury village than a traditional hotel. The building itself is this grand, golden-stone mansion that’s been welcoming guests since 1924, though it feels both timeless and refreshingly modern at the same time.
The Equestrian Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse enthusiasts is the British School of Falconry and the countryside activities — but honestly, it’s the riding that’ll blow you away. The hotel maintains its own stables with horses suitable for every level, from complete beginners to experienced riders who know their way around a saddle. You can explore the estate’s endless bridle paths, or venture further into the Ochil Hills if you’re feeling adventurous. The instructors actually know what they’re talking about, and they’ll match you with the right horse without making you feel like you’re being tested.
Accommodations and Amenities
My room overlooked the championship golf courses (yes, plural — there are three), and I’ll admit the luxury here isn’t the stuffy, intimidating kind. It’s more like staying in a incredibly well-appointed country house where everything just works perfectly. The spa is built into what used to be the old stables, which feels oddly appropriate given the equestrian focus. There’s also a restaurant called Strathearn that serves modern Scottish cuisine — though honestly, with several dining options throughout the estate, you’ll have plenty of choices.
Location and Surroundings
Being about an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow means you get the best of both worlds — proper Scottish countryside without feeling completely cut off from civilization. Auchterarder itself is this charming little town that most people drive through without stopping, but it’s got some decent shops and a few local pubs if you want to venture beyond the estate. The hotel runs a helicopter service if you’re feeling fancy, though I found the drive through the rolling hills pretty spectacular on its own.
Why Guests Love It
Look, there are plenty of luxury hotels in Scotland, but Gleneagles has this rare combination of genuine Scottish hospitality and world-class facilities that doesn’t feel forced or overly polished. The staff seem to actually enjoy working there — you notice these things — and they remember your name after the first day. For horse riders specifically, having access to professional instruction, well-maintained trails, and quality horses all in one place is pretty special. Plus, the estate has enough other activities (falconry, shooting, fishing) that even if you’re traveling with non-riders, everyone stays entertained.

Quality of the property is excellent, rooms were ideal, staff very attentive. What could be improved: Have to be honest, wasn’t bowls over by the food. Lunch at the bar was okay - but a club sandwich has 3 layers of bread - not 2. Dinner was nice but I expected better than nice for the price tbh. Didn’t spoil the stay and would still return, just...
