First Impressions
You know what hits you first when you arrive at Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine? It’s not just the stunning restored monastery buildings — it’s the complete silence, broken only by horses grazing in the distance. This five-star property sits in the heart of Ribera del Duero wine country, and honestly, the setting feels almost too perfect to be real. The cobblestone courtyard and ancient stone walls immediately transport you back centuries, while the modern luxury touches remind you this isn’t a museum — it’s your home for the next few days.
Location & Wine Country Magic
Sardoncillo isn’t exactly a household name, but that’s precisely the point. You’re about 20 minutes from Valladolid, which means you get the best of both worlds — complete countryside tranquility with easy access to civilization when you need it. The hotel sits on a 700-hectare estate that’s been producing wine since the 12th century, and I mean, you can literally see the vineyards from your room window. The equestrian facilities blend seamlessly into this landscape, with riding trails that wind through the vines and along the Duero River.
Equestrian Excellence
The stables here are something else entirely — they house about 40 horses, including some beautiful Spanish breeds that are perfect for exploring the estate’s extensive trail network. What impressed me most was how the staff matched riders with horses based on actual skill level, not just what you claimed to be able to handle. The indoor arena is pristine, but honestly, you’ll want to spend your time on the outdoor trails that meander through olive groves and vineyard rows. There’s something magical about cantering through centuries-old wine country on a crisp morning.
Rooms & Refined Comfort
The accommodations strike that perfect balance between monastic history and contemporary luxury — exposed stone walls paired with heated bathroom floors, if you know what I mean. My suite had this massive window overlooking the courtyard where you could watch the horses being led to pasture each morning. The beds are ridiculously comfortable (probably the best sleep I’ve had in Spain), and there’s actually a decent amount of storage space, which isn’t always a given in converted historic buildings. The attention to detail is remarkable — from the locally-sourced bathroom amenities to the wine selection that changes based on what’s currently being produced on the estate.
Why Guests Love It
The on-site restaurant deserves special mention — Chef Marc Gascons creates these incredible dishes using ingredients from the estate’s own gardens, paired naturally with their exceptional wines. But what really sets this place apart is how seamlessly everything connects. You’re not just staying at a hotel that happens to have horses — you’re experiencing an integrated estate where wine, food, history, and equestrian culture all flow together. The spa treatments using grape-based products might sound gimmicky, but after a long day in the saddle, trust me, they work wonders. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to extend your stay, not just check items off a tourist list.

We had an unforgettable stay at Abadía Retuerta. The staff were exceptionally friendly—special thanks to Juan Carlos and Álvaro for the way they received us, the staff at the Vinoteca, for their great recommendations and food. In general, everyone made us feel very welcome since day one. Our dog was very well accepted, and he was able to dine with...

Charming hotel with a unique environment and privacy. It’s located within a restored abbey from the XII century with only 30 rooms and a lot of privacy. Personnel is looking after you from minute 1 and are extremely polite. Finally, we have been doing wine tasting around the world for years and this has been the best experience by far. We will be...
