Petra Segreta Resort & Spa Overview
First Impressions
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Petra Segreta Resort & Spa tucked away in the hills above San Pantaleo, I thought I’d taken a wrong turn. The winding road through Mediterranean scrubland doesn’t exactly scream luxury resort — but that’s sort of the point. This five-star hideaway keeps its secrets well, and once you pass through those gates, you’ll understand why it’s become such a favorite among discerning equestrian travelers.
The Riding Experience
What sets this place apart is how seamlessly they’ve woven horseback riding into the Sardinian landscape. The stables sit naturally into the hillside, and the horses — mostly sturdy local breeds mixed with some elegant warmbloods — know these ancient trails like old friends. I spent mornings riding through cork oak forests and along granite ridges that give you glimpses of the Costa Smeralda below. The guides actually grew up in this area, so they’ll show you shepherd paths and hidden springs that most visitors never see.
Accommodations & Amenities
My room was more like a private villa, honestly — stone walls, hand-painted tiles, and a terrace that looked out over valleys dotted with wild olive trees. The design feels authentically Sardinian without being kitschy about it. After long days in the saddle, the spa became my evening ritual — their treatments use local herbs and that therapeutic Sardinian clay that somehow makes everything feel better. The restaurant sources ingredients from their own gardens and nearby farms, which means the pecorino cheese actually tastes like the herbs these hills are famous for.
Location & Surroundings
San Pantaleo itself is this charming artist village about fifteen minutes down the mountain — worth wandering through for the galleries and that little piazza where locals gather for evening aperitivos. You’re close enough to Porto Cervo if you want to see how the other half lives, but far enough away to avoid the summer crowds that can make the coast feel overwhelming. The resort provides parking and shuttle service, which I appreciated since those coastal roads can get pretty busy during peak season.
Why Guests Love It
Look, there are plenty of luxury resorts along the Costa Smeralda, but most of them feel like they could be anywhere. Petra Segreta actually belongs to this landscape — the architecture, the riding trails, even the way staff talks about the local wildlife with genuine affection rather than rehearsed enthusiasm. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out, especially if you’re serious about combining world-class riding with authentic Sardinian hospitality.

The gardens are beautiful and the view amazing What could be improved: The gym was too small - not much equipment and in full sun with no air conditioning so hard to use also not you why the house staff constantly walk in front of guests laying on sun loungers going to and from their staff room? Also the food and alcohol charges are exorbitant and...
