Jabulani Safari Relais & Chateaux Overview
First Impressions
When I first arrived at Jabulani Safari Relais & Chateaux, honestly, I wasn’t prepared for just how intimate this place feels. You’re driving through the Kapama Private Game Reserve — about 40 minutes from Hoedspruit — and suddenly there’s this collection of elevated suites that blend so seamlessly into the bushveld, you almost miss them. The staff greets you with warm towels and this genuine excitement that sets the tone immediately.
The Elephant Connection
Here’s what makes Jabulani different from every other five-star safari lodge I’ve stayed at: the resident elephant herd. These aren’t wild elephants you glimpse from a distance — this is a family of orphaned elephants that were rescued and now call Kapama home. You can actually walk with them, which sounds touristy but it’s incredibly moving. The elephant handlers have been with these animals for years, and watching that bond up close? It’s something you don’t forget.
Luxury in the Bush
My suite was basically a glass-walled sanctuary — floor-to-ceiling windows that open completely to blur the line between inside and out. The room comes with a private deck where I had my morning coffee while watching warthogs wander by below. There’s an outdoor shower that’s completely private (trust me on this), and the bed faces directly toward the bushveld so you wake up to impala grazing outside your window. The design feels authentically African without being kitschy, if you know what I mean.
Game Drives and Dining
The game drives here are exceptional because Kapama is part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem — no fences between you and serious wildlife. Our guide knew exactly where the leopards liked to hunt and timed our evening drive perfectly for a lion sighting. Back at the lodge, dinner is served in the main pavilion or — and this was magical — out in the bush under the stars. The restaurant focuses on local ingredients, but the real treat is the boma dinner where they cook over open flames while you listen to the sounds of the African night.
Why Guests Love It
What sets Jabulani apart isn’t just the luxury (though the service is impeccable), it’s the conservation story you become part of. You’re not just observing wildlife — you’re supporting a genuine elephant sanctuary while staying somewhere that actually cares about its environmental impact. The other guests tend to be thoughtful travelers rather than the typical safari crowd, which creates this wonderful atmosphere around the fire pit each evening. Plus, being Relais & Chateaux means every detail is polished, from the twice-daily housekeeping to the way they remember exactly how you like your gin and tonic by day two.

Everyone working at Jabulani goes above and beyond for their guests. Due to the limited number of rooms, each guest receives personalized attention from dedicated staff. Within a few hours, you're on a first name basis with everybody working to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, since its only 3 or 4 people that are dedicated...

Where do I start… most incredible place I’ve ever stayed at. The staff was INCREDIBLE. We had the best Ranger (Ryan) ever, so full of energy and made our experience one never to forget. The Chef (Henlu) was the nicest guy you could ask for, our butler (Obert) also one to make us smile at every turn and would get every single detail perfect without...

Beautifully furnished and clean room. What could be improved: Lack of attention to details. I ordered specific breakfast on 2 occasions but got different orders. Although, on the first night i clearly explained my dietary preferences to the Chef. Other than that, the dinners were exceptional. Further, for some reason, they kept on harassing me to...

Property was nice but compared to Pondoro, Jabulani was meh. Food was excellent. Meeting the rehabilitated elephants was great. What could be improved: Jabulani Safari is a place where incompetent management are staffed. This property should not be a Relais & Chateaux property as it fails to meet basic needs and expectations. We came here to...
