Gilpin Hotel & Lake House Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, tucked away on Crook Road, I honestly wasn’t prepared for what I was walking into. This five-star property sits in the heart of the Lake District, and you know what struck me immediately? It doesn’t try to shout about being luxurious — it just quietly is. The building has this understated elegance that feels more like a sophisticated country home than a typical hotel, which makes sense given its setting just outside Bowness-on-Windermere.
The Equestrian Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse enthusiasts is their partnership with local stables — they’ve got connections with some of the best riding centers in the Lakes, and the concierge actually knows the terrain. I spent an afternoon riding through the fells, and honestly, having someone who understands both horses and the local bridleways made all the difference. The routes they recommended took me past hidden tarns and up to viewpoints that most tourists never see, and getting back to luxury after a day in the saddle felt pretty perfect.
Accommodation & Amenities
My room was something else — not huge, but every detail was considered. The bathroom alone probably cost more than most people’s cars, and I mean that in the best way. There’s a spa on-site that’s worth mentioning, especially after long days riding; their treatments use local ingredients, which sounds gimmicky but actually works. The restaurant serves what I’d call elevated Lake District cuisine — think Herdwick lamb that’s been treated with proper respect, not just fancy plating.
Location & Local Knowledge
Being positioned between Windermere and the central fells gives you options that bigger hotels closer to the lake center can’t match. You’re five minutes from the water if you want the tourist experience, but you’re also perfectly placed for heading up into Grizedale Forest or toward the Langdale valleys. The staff — and this matters for riders — actually know which paths are suitable for different skill levels and where you’ll find the best going after rain.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a budget option, but if you’re serious about combining quality riding with genuine luxury, it delivers. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you experience how everything works together — the local knowledge, the attention to detail, even the way they handle parking (which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with riding gear). It’s the sort of place where you can push yourself on horseback during the day, then sink into proper comfort at night, knowing tomorrow’s adventure is already sorted.

Garden suite was superb plenty of room and quality furnishings plus bonus of use of a sauna, reception staff to waiting and ground staff were fantastic and helpful
What could be improved: You need to book reservations in the two restaurants well in advance of arriving but my fault really for that.

The staff were excellent m: polite, professional and friendly. The room was clean, large and comfortable. The dining rooms were clean and inviting. The breakfasts were excellent. What could be improved: The eventmeals in both restaurants were not to my taste. The choice of meals on the menu was unappealing. I did not mind the small portions but...

Fabulous location, over looking a private lake with hot tubs in the grounds & a pool. Room was very well appointed as expected for 5* accommodation. Stayed specifically as we wanted to dine at the Gilpin Lodge. What could be improved: Check in not that great. No introduction to the facilities and how to use them (hot tubs or rowing boats)...
