Farlam Hall Hotel & Restaurant
First Impressions
You know what strikes you first about Farlam Hall Hotel & Restaurant? It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is — a proper English country house that happens to welcome guests who love horses as much as the owners do. This four-star property sits in the rolling countryside near Brampton, and honestly, the approach through the tree-lined drive tells you everything you need to know about the pace of life here.
The Riding Experience
The equestrian facilities are what really set this place apart, and I mean that. They’ve got their own stables on-site, plus acres of bridleways that wind through the surrounding Cumbrian countryside. The staff actually know their way around horses — not just the basics, but proper horsemanship that comes from years of experience. Whether you’re bringing your own horse or arranging rides through them, they’ll sort you out with routes that showcase the best of the local terrain, including some lovely woodland trails that most visitors never discover.
The Property & Accommodation
Inside, each room feels like it belongs in a well-loved family home rather than a hotel — Persian rugs, antique furniture, and views over gardens that have been tended for decades. The restaurant serves dinner at a communal table (well, sort of communal — it’s more intimate than it sounds), which creates this unexpectedly social atmosphere where you end up chatting with other guests about the day’s rides. There’s parking right outside, which you’ll appreciate after a long drive up from the south.
Location & Local Knowledge
Being near Brampton puts you within striking distance of Hadrian’s Wall — something the staff will enthusiastically tell you about if you show any interest in history. But honestly, the real draw is the immediate countryside, which offers some of the most varied riding in this part of England. The nearby Eden Valley provides gentler terrain for beginners, while more experienced riders can tackle the rougher ground toward the Scottish borders.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back is the authentic feel of the place — it’s been in the same family for decades, and they genuinely care about both horses and hospitality. The 8.4 rating reflects this attention to detail, from the way they handle horse care to the surprisingly good wine selection at dinner. It’s the sort of place where you can actually relax between rides, maybe with a book in the garden, without feeling like you’re missing out on anything.

So we have stayed many times at Farlam Hall over the past 20 years. However this was the first time we have visited since the new owners have renovated the property. We therefore arrived with some trepidation. We had no need to worry the transformation was outstanding! The staff were welcoming and very attentive and friendly. The food, especially...

Quiet location, warm welcome, great team and good food from the tasting menu 👌🏻

Not a particularly warm and cosy hotel, lots of beige spaces without much colour, lots of blank walls and sterile looking lounges - needs warming up!

Great dining in the Cedar restaurant. Rooms were nice and quiet. Good coffee bags in them. What could be improved: I took my Dad for his Birthday and he didn't get a card or a cake at dinner. We got it after we went to bed. Not the service I expected as a repeat visitor. Carpets in the dining room needed cleaning and I had to ask for our rooms to...

No Tea/Coffee in room. Room didn't really have anywhere to put things, most of our stuff ended up on the floor.

We were met in the car park and immediately offered help. Our rooms were ready and provided exactly what we requested. The tour of the guest areas was a lovely welcome. The attention paid to my elderly father was appreciated.
