Château de Mercuès

Château de Mercuès Overview
First Impressions
When I first drove up the winding road to Château de Mercuès, I honestly wasn’t prepared for just how dramatic the setting would be. This medieval castle perches on a cliff overlooking the Lot Valley, and you can see the vineyards stretching out below — it’s the kind of view that makes you pull out your phone immediately. The four-star property has been carefully restored, but they’ve kept all the character that makes French châteaux so special.
The Equestrian Experience
What really sets this place apart for horse lovers is their partnership with local riding schools in the valley below. The concierge arranged rides through the Cahors wine region for me, and honestly, cantering through those ancient vineyards felt pretty magical. The terrain varies from gentle riverside paths along the Lot to more challenging hill trails — perfect if you want to work on your seat while taking in some serious scenery. They also connect you with instructors who know the local horses well, which I appreciated since each horse has its own personality.
Staying in History
My room was in the original castle structure, with stone walls that are probably 600 years old and windows that frame the valley perfectly. The furnishings blend antique pieces with modern comfort — you’re sleeping in history, but you’ve still got excellent Wi-Fi and a marble bathroom. Some rooms have those tiny medieval windows that are charming but don’t let in tons of light, so if that matters to you, ask about the tower suites when booking.
Dining and Local Flavors
The restaurant focuses heavily on regional specialties, and since the château produces its own Cahors wine, you’re basically getting a taste of the terroir with every meal. I mean, how often do you get to drink wine that was literally made on the same property where you’re staying? The chef sources ingredients from local markets in nearby Cahors, and the duck confit I had was probably the best I’ve tasted in France — which is saying something.
Why Guests Love It
What strikes me most about Château de Mercuès is how it manages to feel both grand and intimate. You’re staying in a real castle with incredible views and serious history, but the staff treats you like family rather than just another guest. For riders, the access to the Lot Valley’s trails is unbeatable — you can explore medieval villages, riverside paths, and hilltop vineyards all from the same base. The combination of authentic French château living with excellent riding opportunities is pretty rare, and the fact that you can end each day with wine that’s made right there on the property? Well, that’s just the perfect way to celebrate a good day in the saddle.

A dream of a place and an amazing atmosphere. Breakfast at the highest level. We would love to come back again What could be improved: We have had dinners with a Michelin star in the past several times. 200 euros is true that it is a lot. But we haven't had the meal that lasts 4 hours!!!!...... We asked the waiters if we could speed up the process...

Splendid location with impressive chateau and stunning views. The restaurant was perfect for an atmospheric dining experience with friends. The trip to the winery and complimentary wine tasting was an enjoyable extra.
What could be improved: Cooked breakfast not always warm for late risers. Internet connection slow at times.

The location is superb, very dramatic. Loved the food and overall ambience. Staff was great, very personable. The view of the terrace from our room was enchanting. What could be improved: While the room itself was large, bathroom was quite small but understand; built as a chateau not a hotel! Thought the dark colors of the walls in the dining...

Breathtaking property as you enter with gorgeous backdrop. Front desk staff was attentive. Room, bed bathroom was comfortable and spacious with cute old peep hole windows looking out.
