Château de Berne
First Impressions
Honestly, Château de Berne hits you with that “I can’t believe I’m actually here” feeling the moment you drive through the gates. This five-star estate sprawls across 1,000 acres of Provence countryside near Lorgues, and it’s the kind of place where luxury feels effortless rather than showy. The main château dates back to the 1750s, but what really caught my attention were the horses grazing in the vineyards — you know you’re somewhere special when the scenery looks like a wine commercial.
The Equestrian Experience
The riding here is honestly spectacular, and I say that as someone who’s tried horse hotels across Europe. They’ve got about 30 horses ranging from gentle trail partners to more spirited mounts for experienced riders. The instructors actually know their stuff — no generic pony rides here. You’ll explore the estate’s own trails through olive groves and vineyards, or venture into the surrounding Var countryside where the views stretch to the Maures mountains. What I loved most was the morning rides through the estate’s organic vineyards; there’s something magical about watching the sunrise while your horse picks its way between century-old vines.
Accommodation & Comfort
My room was in one of the estate’s restored buildings, and the attention to detail was impressive without being fussy. Think antique furnishings mixed with modern amenities — the kind of place where you get heated bathroom floors but also 300-year-old exposed beams. The suites have private terraces overlooking either the vineyards or the lavender fields, depending on your preference. You’ll find the beds ridiculously comfortable (I actually asked about the linens), and the bathrooms feature local stone and luxury toiletries that smell like Provençal herbs.
Dining & Wine
The estate produces its own wines, which you’ll taste at the on-site restaurant — and they’re genuinely good, not just hotel novelty bottles. Chef Louis Rameau sources most ingredients from the property’s own gardens and local producers, so everything tastes incredibly fresh. I mean, when your tomatoes come from the garden you can see from your table, you notice the difference. The wine cellar tours are worth doing too, especially if you’re curious about organic viticulture. They also offer cooking classes using estate-grown ingredients, which pairs perfectly with a riding vacation when you want to slow down and really experience Provence.
Why Guests Love It
What makes Château de Berne special for horse lovers is how seamlessly everything connects — you’re not just staying near stables, you’re living on a working wine estate where riding feels like a natural part of daily life. The staff genuinely cares about matching riders with suitable horses and routes, and the setting provides that authentic Provençal experience without feeling touristy. Plus, there’s a spa using Caudalie wine-based treatments for when your muscles need attention after longer rides. The whole experience feels like visiting wealthy French friends who happen to own horses, vineyards, and impeccable taste.
